More Cab?

Fuck yeah. Now that’s taking life’s lemons and making lemonade.

Okay - more local shopping and making decisions. Tried the 2x12, it was heavier than I liked and 8 ohm.

My big decision now is if I want this larger cab to be 4 ohm or 8ohm. Or if I get a pair of 8ohm 2x10s (which are all over the place).

My gut is saying 4ohm 4x10 that is <60lbs.

Current short list:
A vintage Ampeg SVT 4x10 (probably 70’s or 80’s), 4ohm. $300, but I need to drive an hour away. $300
A slightly newer Ampeg SVT 4x10 (probably '00s), 4 ohm. $550 at Music Go Round
Modern Markbass 4x10, 4ohm, in nice condition from Music Go Round - $600
Ashdown Deep 4x10, 8ohm. $275
Hunt for a pair of similar 2x10’s that I can mix and match with each other or my 1x15.

Don’t know which 2x12 you tried, but I love my Bergantino NXT 212. Best of NAMM a few years ago coming in at 49 pounds and you get the 4 ohm. Glad to lengthen your short list.

I’m shopping the used inventory at my local Music Go Round.

Good way to go and although you may not find as many 4 ohm 212 cabs in the price range you’re looking at there are some out there. Like I posted earlier I sold my Epifani UL212 for $600. Bergantino cabs would likely be a bit more and Baer makes a really nice 8 ohm 112 you could double up on.

But there’s nothing wrong with a great sounding 410 either. I played one for years and only sold it after Neo cabs came out at half the weight. Happy hunting.

Check out the used market. I was amazed at what flippers can score while trolling estate sales. I picked up a Fender BXR-215 that looked as though it just came out of the crate even though I knew it had to out of the early 1990s. It has plenty of oomph, far more than I need but it’s just so cool. Keep your eyes open.

I’m getting tired of trying to navigate the used market. New Markbass are on sale. I think I’m just going to pull the trigger and buy new.

Looking at the MB58R 104.

Either the P or the Energy. Specs wise look comparable. The Energy is more expensive, but lighter. But the P isn’t exactly heavy.

$750 for the P - 47lbs
$850 for the Energy - 37lbs

???

I just bought the MB58s in 12”. Very happy.

Somewhere on the web there’s a comparison / explanation about the sound differences between the P, Energy etc.

Unfortunately, I’m finding lots of details describing the “Pure” vs. the “Envergy”, but not much comparing the P.

The “Pure” is supposed to be really bright and articulate sounding - focusing on highs. The “Energy” has a purer more mid-focused tone (which I want). Between those two, I’d definitely go “Energy”

The P uses older ceramic speakers and a piezo tweeter. They describe it as a more “classic” cabinet sound. But are otherwise vague on what that means.

It looks like you have the Energy.

I’m leaning towards the P because it’s $100 cheaper and I suspect I want the warmer sound, and am fine with a cab that is merely “lightweight” instead of “ultra-lightweight”

I got the Energy because I could get a deal. I agree the info is pretty sparse.

They’re all on sale with solid discounts, but the Energy is the most expensive.

P - $750
Pure - $800
Energy - $850

The Standard 104 HF (plywood enclosure, front ported, neodymium speakers… nice stuff) is also $850

Ordered today. Went with the 104 Energy.

Got an open box for $750. Was going to be $70 shipping, but I called them up and the sales rep hooked me up with free shipping.
