Mysterious bass model?

Hello everyone,

I came across this video, and the bass used has a quite marvellous look…

But impossible to find what model it can be… and comments are disabled… would you have an idea ?

Thanks

Bassly yours.

PS : as suggested, I share the video but not sure it can help :

Please share the video.

It could be the Vintage Framus Star bass but I’ve never seen one with the neck pickup locate down near the middle. Usually it’s at the neck heel.

That’s done (in the initial post)

This is a tough one :joy: I could not find one that match the pickup location on a single cut semi hollow with double F hole and that double binding work. He is European.

East German Marma thin hollow body is the closest I’ve seen, but the neck pickup in the OP’s post is lower than on a typical Marma.

It looks like it might be a Hofner H500/18 or similar and it’s had the bridge and neck pups removed and replaced with the current one that’s wired through the f-hole? It also has 24 frets vs 22 in my photo.

My guess is that it’s a custom-built bass…

No it can’t be that. Too much differences and the cutaway also is not corresponding, neither the wood apprearance.

Not terribly helpful but this was on his instagram saying it’s unknown. On another post he said it was from either the 1950s or 1960s.

Visually the Ibanez ABG 140 looks the most similar to me and it probably wouldn’t be too hard to drop in a vintage or vintage sounding pickup

If I scrolled down one more post would’ve seen this!

hahaha that’s hilarious!

It’s a gorgeous bass. There’s a bunch of different potential rabbit holes for looking but I think probably just visually trying to match the tailpiece and pickup might be the simplest way.

I think I found one of her siblings :star_struck:

The photo showing the entire bass indicates that the two pickups have been removed and one of them put in a central position.

Here’s another one with a metal control plate:

This might even be the same bass as the one on bassic

The important information was DDR (German Democratic Republic). It helped skim the search results

Here’s actually our winner :star_struck:

And we skipped it because the pickups have been moved

@MikeC you should have posted a photo of it
