I have played various instruments my whole life but picking up bass started as a slightly convoluted side quest from vocal training my speech therapist was having me try out as a workaround some of the language and memory issues I have.
“Older Than the Hills” by Green Lung was one of the first songs I ever tried to play. It didn’t matter that it took me months to work through the first few measures I was absolutely hooked. It was so ridiculously above my pay grade but instead of being discouraging it just made me excited to grow as a player.
The most recent song that gave me that same feeling is “Bernadette” by the Four Tops. I fully gave out an actual giggle of delight when I was able to recognize by ear a chromatic walk down into a finger roll the first time I tried to play it. I’ll probably never be able to do James Jameson’s lines justice, and that’s okay! I’m still just happy to be able to pick up and play.

When I was 13 or 14 I had a beard and could buy booze at a few packies around here. There is an all boys school in Westwood (Xaverian Bros.) that had weekly cover bands and occasionally big name bands and my friends and I (Dickie Barrett was with us IIRC, he would later attend that school due to being a rebel at local schools) would get in line with students and squeak by the church folks who volunteered. We usually had a bag of weed and beer/whiskey before going in and always had a great time.
The night Blue Oyster Cult played we were not let in and got up in the bleachers outside to see some of the show but it was plenty loud to hear it very well. The worst part of that concert was the temperature was in the single digits and it is a long walk home when the weather is nice but we were hypothermic by the time we got home. W

Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Mel and honestly there wasn’t a first song that made me fall in love with bass but a first genre, Jazz. I fell in love with the deep sound of each note and the bass solos are cool too . I really enjoy Chameleon from the album Fingerpainting by Christian McBride and 2 others.
I also started learning bass because I was joining my schools jazz band and I wanted to learn a different instrument from my regular band. My band teacher really knew bass and suggested it. That’s how I ended up playing bass

that’s easy for me….The Temptations “My Girl”…always loved this song…now I can (sorta) play it!!

Not a song but a band, most all the basslines from ‘The Animals’ in the mid 60’s when I was just a kid. “We gotta get out of this place” being one of the standout songs.

I don’t know if it really made me fall in love with the bass, but the first time I can remember hearing the bass and thinking, “wow, that is cool” was this: Barney Miller

Well when I started, the first song that made me feel excited was “I feel good”. Now it’s” Oogie Boogie” looking over the fence, anything by Nile Rogers…. It’s a phase…. Lol

Very similar to me. Even down to the wife and dog being my main audience in the living room. Ha ha. The bass just clicks as a good hobby and, having bigger hands too, I enjoy playing it more than a guitar. I always felt like I was fighting up hill trying to crowd my fingers on the fretboard.
