Opinions on the xBlend II (or how to build one?)

I could not find BQ music website. Only on ETSY.

I think a SS Stingray looks and sounds great

If you get a mustang, you can buy a pickguard for the old Pawnshop model and this will tell you exactly where the hole needs to go for optimal harmonics. And I have a Curtis Novak humbucker ready to go in mine.

I am still gas’ing on this red one

I like both the Squier classics mustang and the American performer mustang. There’s something super awesome about ‘em Mustang pickups. Love them.

Sterling SS on the other hand holds special place. Both are 30” scale but Sterling feels shorter and features 22 frets vs 19 on the mustang.

Yes, it’s only on ETSY.

I have to think about everything you all said. But I will give the HB a chance.
Sorry to be stubborn!

PS and don’t forget - I really really really like to mod stuff!

Modding stuff can be fun, but my time is limited and I’d prefer to use my “bass time” in the evening actually playing.

I hear you. Learning bass is one of many things I do. And usually I mod everything I own. Just because…

Modding = assimilating!

A quick translation here, and I’m sorry Al not trying to be a pedant but folks may not get it at first, I think Al meant to say Curtis Novak and Lollar pickups.

My absolute last final complete comment and I won’t be back in this thread

My opinion on the XBlend is you’re better off with a Stellartone Tonestyler

The Tonestyler is a tone pot, and instead of one capacitor, it has nine, and you switch through the caps to get different tones, from bright to fat, and pass through (so none). I have it on my Squier mustang with a Novak pickup, and it sounds terrific, clear, and easy to dial in a tone (and get back to it)

I take that statement just as seriously as the “no more projects statement”

Tonestyler is quite expensive in Germany (but at least we got it) … and it does not solve my “Make Jazz-Pickup Great Sounding” (again?) issue.

It’s “just” EQ, right?
Zzzee Zzzermans on Bassic.de made me really curious about the serial/parallel option.

EDIT:

But it’s a great idea. I will make that myself!

Is Tonestyler really more expensive than an XBlend II?

I have one I’m not using, a buy one get one free thing. I’m just saying that I think it’s a better tone option than an XBlend.

How to improved a Jazz sound? Sadowsky preamp. I bought an old model when I dabbled at left hand when I could not play right hand, and the preamp makes a jazz sound fantastic. I went and bought a Sadowsky preamp pedal so I could replicate it.

Maybe I wasn’t serious, and maybe I have my next project in mind…

I’m really looking forward to reading about that!!!

this thing is some kind of simplified version of a Gibson Varitone. the Varitone uses a very special (and rare) choke, that’s why some guys went with the idea of a version with capacitors only, and without any choke.

it can be very interesting if you want some passive onboard filters. and it’s quite easy and cheap to build.

I myself own a Tiny Tone Varitone which is a reproduction of a '50s Gibson Varitone in a stompbox form format. Like the original Varitone, it’s 100% passive.

The one I own is the first ever V2 one built by Tiny Tone.

That’s what the guy in the video does, right?

The channel is quote interesting for modders (@Wombat-metal ):

correct :+1:

I mean not as fabulous as a P bass but still :sunglasses:

Ok. Cool. Fair enough. I recognize the symptoms.

The only thing you and I disagree on is the Bass. There are better candidates.

LOL yeah no kidding. For the goal of a nice fat HB sound I’m trying to think of worse mod platform candidates than an entry level Harley Benton J-bass and… I got nothin’. Even a crappy clone of a viola bass would likely be a better choice. I think you have to go piezo electroacoustic before you get more of a stretch there.

But, yes. GAS has hold of this one. Reason will not apply here. Best to let this run its course. We could take side bets on outcomes maybe

The ironic thing is - I bet this thing is actually a solid J-bass. It’s probably fine at what it was made for.
