Bumping up an old thread, as there are so many new members.
I pretty much have no hobbies apart from bass The past 18 years have mostly been way too busy in terms of having kids, being a carer and volunteering. A few months ago I was feeling quite down about not having artistic creative outlets as I always believed I had no musical or artistic talent but I decided to try bass and love it. So, in terms of time I spend on hobbies it’s more playing the bass or learning more about it.
Other things I enjoy are cooking (until I get sick of it) and gardening (mostly fruit and veg). I used to learn Japanese and spoke enough beginner Japanese to get by when I went there on a holiday a few years ago, but then stopped learning when I got home. I really should pick it up again as I want to go back to Japan.
Also like eating out, often on my own and getting back in to seeing live music on my own too. I enjoy doing stuff like this solo or with friends.
I’ve recently bought a secondhand drum kit as drums were something else I wanted to learn, but I’m not really feeling it as much as bass. I think this is because I really like how B2B is laid out and the drum course I’m doing really doesn’t compare IMO.
Before kids my husband I lived in Europe and I enjoyed travelling and hope to do that again but health issues mean long haul flights aren’t a great idea. Also need to get back in to fitness as I stacked on the kilos after breaking toes five years ago and have had problems with my feet since… playing bass has at least made me lose weight on the fingers as all my rings now fall off, ha ha… maybe adopting a bass face will help lose some double chin.
We eat out for a living, lol. My wife is an amateur cook who loves to eat out trying new things. I usually stay out of the kitchen when she’s cooking especially trying new recipes. What you don’t see you you know?
Sunday morning my daughters and I usually cook breakfast for the family. She’s come a long way, last month she made the homemade pappardelle on a hand crank pasta roller. It’s actually better than the attachment on kitchen aid. She wants to learn how to make gnocchi I’m all for it but boy, the cleanup after kids cooking is not fun, lol.
I love playing ping pong! I used to not really like it, because I did not succeed. But I practiced for a long time with it, and now I can fully enjoy the game!
By the way, I noticed here a similar situation with the guitar. I rarely played it before because I couldn’t learn some of the chords that were difficult for me.
Also I like cooking. This is very relaxing thing for me, and I love tyring new recipes. Glad to have my family, who tries my cooking experiments
I see that there are many cyclists and bicycle riders among us. I just wanted to add myself to that growing list. I love cycling which I took up after running a few full marathons. It was getting harder to keep up with the training required for long distance running so I switched to cycling. I bought an entry level Trek road bike which I’ve practically changed and swapped out most of the parts. And then recently bought a Jamis gravel bike called the Renegade S2. It’s a steel framed gravel bicycle since I like the sound of old school. I’ve been riding around Saitama and the west of Tokyo when I have time. There are many rivers and bicycle lanes here so riding in Japan is quite fun. My latest purchase is a Dahon Boardwalk D7. It’s a nice fold-up bicycle that I can take on the train and ride around places that might be too far to ride to from home. In Japan you have to bag up your bicycle before boarding a train. So a folding bicycle makes things easier and faster when riding the trains with bicycle in tow.
I am artistically gifted, I have been drawing, painting, and making figurines from modeling clay since I was a child. Aaand I’ve always loved tinkering. Many elements of the interior of my apartment are my own.
Recently, however, I have completely devoted myself to my “musical passion” and currently no longer have other hobby… I would gladly trade my artistic skills for musical talent
Too bad it doesn’t work like that
By the way, I’ve noticed that I don’t care about the things I have. I think a lot of people would like to draw nicely, I can, but for me it means nothing. We are always attracted to what we don’t have.
Well, I build model cars, mostly 1:24 scale, but I do have some 1:16, including a Porsche 356 Cabriolet I’m working on now. I’ve got something like 70 models in plastic cases on display in my office (I’ll take a pic). I also do cross stitch and then mat board and framing them. Video games, especially MLB The Show is how I relax, and for the intense times, I build the basses. I’m also an avid writer with 1 book published through Kindle Publishing called Terror Vacation. I also collect Dungeons and Dragons books and modules.
Games for me too, big time. Currently mostly Elder Scrolls Online and Sea of Thieves, though that’s just because I’m on a Destiny 2 break. I think I have like 175 games in my Steam library.
I’m an occasional modeler too.
Primarily WW1 aircraft in 1/72 and 1/32.
I’m currently working on a Wingnut Wings Sopwith Camel in 1/32.
Hopefully I’ll find time to finish it over the Christmas holidays.
