@howard Right on!
I miss the Men and Magic days, which were the original rules before 1st edition. It was simple, a Mage did 1d4 damage and had a 1d4 hit die, thief 1d6, cleric 1d8, fighter 1d10. Didn’t matter what weapon was used. A mage with a great sword did a 1d4 damage, and a fighter with a soup ladle did 1d10
It really facilitated rp’ing when you couldn’t min/max. I played a updated game recently and combat was so slow. I too miss the old days, 2nd edition was probably the pinnacle.
It helps that all of the best sourcebooks came out in second edition. I mean, even setting aside stuff like the Monster Manual and DMG, the bulk of Forgotten Realms was the main setting for a lot of the standard 2nd stuff.
I’ve switched over to Cypher system by Monte Cook games as my primary system. (Monte Cook was creator of Planescape and lead designer for 3e.) It’s the perfect balance of soft/crunchy for my taste.
It feels and flows a lot like how I remember my friends and I playing 2e back in the 90’s. Which, we barely used any of the rules, and largely just described something and the DM set a target number.
I ride motorcycles,crochet/knit, play video games
I knit and crochet too! What kind of things do you like to make?
I’ve made hats, scarves, butterflies the typical things. But I really wanna make wobble’s characters. I feel like it’s a bit advanced for me tho.
One of my other big hobbies is weight lifting.
Earlier this week, I got back into the 1,000lbs club! (Combined Squat, Bench, and Deadlift of >1,000 lbs. / 455kg).
My standing best lifts I set back in 2023 (1,100 lbs… or the 500kg club). Then I had a series of health issues that kept setting back my training. Which is actually why I picked up bass, because I had several months where I couldn’t exercise. I’m not back up quite there, but I’m in that same general ballpark.
Thursday I easily lifted:
Bench 250 lbs (113 kg)
Squat 395 lbs (180 kg)
I’ve already deadlifted 385 (175 kg) for x3 reps. Which puts me at an easy 1,030 (467 kg). This coming week, I’m planning to pull a 415 deadlift (188 kg) and go for 150+ (68 kg) overhead press.
I’m really excited to be back up to this strength level again and have everything cranking along nicely.
(Edit)
Update: Successfully pulled a 420lbs deadlift today. This is my biggest lift ever.
