P Bass players - what do you look for in a roundwound string?

Forgot to say that yes, I’m a BIG fan of DBA stuff.

Out of my price range right now but I love that new Bass War pedal.

Definitely post-punk adjacent at minimum; very post-punk on the vocals. Note that their bass player plays a J (nothing more scooped than that  )

Yeah post-hardcore, love this genre.

I like this a lot! I would say post-hardcore too. Very cool sound. A little saturated in the mix so you’ll definitely want to be cutting through with punchy mids and highs, but thats ok

Yeah it’s quite saturated.

Mind you it’s a demo and the guitarist is filling in the space with midi etc.

But you can see where my problem-solving started lol

“Bastard Pass” is the first song I got sent before I jammed with him. I came up with a bass part to play and he loved it. But since the get go I’ve been figuring out how to fit.

I don’t JUST want to bang on roots (which I don’t) but I’m not going to do a bunch of busy passages either since there’s not a ton of space. So the sound I provide needs to be full and felt etc.

IRT presence, I think Kim Gordon could be a good inspiration. There aren’t a ton of memorable Sonic Youth bass lines (a few like My Friend Goo and Bull in the Heather) and if you look any up, they aren’t terribly technical. What she does that works so well for that band though is she and Steve Shelley are the heartbeat that let Thurston and Lee go apeshit then find their way back. Yours is a very different kind of band but being that heartbeat for the guitars is kinda what I’m thinking.

Great recommendation!

The guitarist told be a few times he was a big Sonic Youth fan.

And I’ve definitely ssen Kim Gordon show up more than a few times a solid bassplayer recommendation.

I was playing in a band with two guitarists both using Les Pauls and amps that were eating every bit of the mids they could swallow. I was doing vocals and playing my Jazz Bass though a cab with 2x12s. Even more mid range goulash.

So I switched to my PBass and a 1x15 cab and submarined those two LPs getting in right underneath them all cozy and tight. I hate having to compete with two loud guitars like that but there’s always a solution if you have the right gear for it.

Kept the “tube doors” closed though.

I was finally able to talk one into playing a Strat. That also helped.

I have D’Addario XL strings on most of my basses and on my pbass, I usually have the tone somewhere between almost all the way down and all the way down. After 2 years, the rounds on my pbass are sounding pretty good though the G is still a bit bright :joy: might finally get around to putting my flats on there this Christmas

Wait… you’ve used the same strings for 2 years?

That’s quite the longevity endorsement! lol

I just threw some EXLs on (45-100) and they feel great. Less tension than other’s I’ve tried but fantastic tone - bright enough for sure.

The rounds on my 5 string bass are almost 4 years old but i don’t play it as often as my pbass

tl;dr he is letting them die of old age and become flats with texture

I seem to have neglected one of my more typical snarky responses. Must fix that.

" P Bass players - what do you look for in a roundwound string"?

One that says Flatwound on the packaging. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Me: Mom can I get flat wound strings?

Mom: We have flat wound strings at home.

My satin neck has gotten pretty glossy from all the playing too
