Pentatonic Scales For Bass

In one of his videos, Josh talks about soloing “on the dots”. (I don’t remember which video.) Does playing on the dots work because it pretty much gives you the notes of pentatonic scales? (And no jarring half-steps that we dropped from the heptatonic scales?)

I think this is a classical music training thing. It’s exactly how and the order I learned it too, and how I think about it.

Like, there are some real practical applications when you think about how it all fits together. Since (like the relative minor to a major scale) it is enharmonic with it’s relative minor, one easy relation is you can convert from major pentatonic to relative minor pentatonic by making the last note in the scale the first note.

This is super cool.

Or I am a nerd.

Or both.

OK, that does it. Now I have to rewatch Revenge of the Nerds for the gazillioneth time. The original had no right being as good as it was. The sequel pretty much sucked.

Speaking of things that could never happen today, no way would that movie be greenlit in 2025

Damn. Can’t find it on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or Canal+ (which includes MAX, Paramount+ and Apple TV+, plus a Video On Demand channel).

Looks like it’s available on Freebie TV / Roku

I actually find it easier and faster to memorise these pentatonic scales by learning them without comparing them to the major scale. I get them imprinted faster on my memory this way, by looking and playing them.

Otherwise I would condition myself to thinking it is just like the major scale but removing two notes. But people are different, for some it might make a lot of sense to compare them.

Google Play Movies has the French version “Les Tronches”, best I could find.
