Plugins I Have Known And Loved

Ok @wellbi that made me check out the modwave, which I think actually sounds more musical and useful, but it has a UI much more like I would expect from Korg (i.e. completely inscrutable).

Then again I am a sucker for wavetable synths so no surprise that I like it. It just sounds excellent.

It’s a bummer they couldn’t have somehow combined the wavestate and the modwave into one synth - each has advantages over the other and they complement each other nicely.

Subbed to SonicPass for a month to see if Falcon 3 had been made better for workflow. LOL nope, it’s still the Microsoft Excel or EVE Online of synths.

If UVI had designed this today there is no way they would have made the same choices.

Spectacular deal on Synthmaster 2 right now, for $29:

This is an excellent synthesizer with around 2000 presets; a good deal even if you aren’t in to sound design. It’s been on my list for a while and it was a no-brainer at this price.

It may actually scratch my layered sequencing itch all on its own. Though I’ll still probably get Modwave Native.

This is a pretty solid endorsement:

So, would you say this synth is clearly more geared towards house and ambient (including the pre-requisite drums and bass sounds), or are there also glorious analog sounds to be found

It’s probably most useful for analog sounds but with a lot of options. It can be used for anything. It is a powerhouse. For $29 it’s worth it just for the presets.

Just for fun I just threw together a classic analog supersaw in it, took about 3 minutes including detune and filter - and this is from not having used it building patches from scratch. Sounded like a Juno or Prophet.

It’s not Phase Plant but it’s really pretty good.

@wellbi dammit. Now I kind of want a Modwave. I mean a real one. I blame you

Hardware is dead to me but I found myself thinking the usual gateway drug thoughts like “maybe I could use it as a MIDI controller most of the time.”

But then I found out how shoddy the QC on them was and how flimsy they and the Wavestate apparently are, so that killed it. Hopefully the V2 will be better.

How is your opsix? Well made?

Before I read the following paragraph after the quote I was immediately in my mind: “No, you don’t want any of this opsix/wavestate/modwave synths as a keyboard.” I was recently cleaning my room and “de-dusting” all synths, so I partially deconstructed the synth. It’s plastic, yeah, but it actually doesn’t feel that bad. But, the keyboard is absolutely tragical, for real, I have Behringer Deepmind underneath the Opsix on a stand and it’s absolutely laughable in comparison. But I love the engine in it. It’s my favorite digital synth by far.

Yeah that’s what I read too, the keybed is a bad joke. I’ll keep my Arturia

Apparently the v1 Modwaves are notorious for bad displays and Kaoss pads too.

Yeah that’s the thing with the Modwave too, it’s like a much much better DW-8000. Four excellent wavetable and sample engines, plus similar sequencing to the Wavestate.

It’s extremely “mushy”, like playing on a turd. (Well, I imagine that it would feel similar to this … ) and what’s my biggest pet peeve is when a synth that can take aftertouch modulation doesn’t have an aftertouch keyboard. Not that I know how to utilize it when playing, but when messing around with the engine you cannot use this modulation without some workarounds.

Regarding display, faders, and rotary controls … I was probably lucky with this piece, it’s good. But for like 500 bucks what it cost when I’ve bought it, it’s really flimsy piece of a kit.

The Blackhole reverb plugin from Eventide is available for 29$ at Plugin Boutique.

You need coupon PBNovBlackhole to get the discount. It is applied all the way at the end of the checkout process under “promotional code”.

(Apparently, it is about 180$ normally, which is, of course, outrageous).

It’s one of the best reverbs and I would pick it up if I weren’t already going for SparkVerb. It’s based on their Blackhole hardware unit of course.

Thank you! That is a good deal!!!

I might even just stick with MCharmVerb too. I really like clear, cold, '80s style algorithmic digital reverbs. MCharmVerb has to be one of the best free plugins. MeldaProduction makes great stuff.

Valhalla Supermassive is another great free option.

Modwave Native is on sale now through the 30th, so I’ll probably be picking it up in a bit. Still deciding whether or not I can work with its interface. Korg so tabby. Two pages of two layers of two layers of tabs!

It is nice to see that more developers are stealing the Pigments modulation strip though, that’s good UI. Current uses it too:

Pigments using that for the mod matrix was brilliant.

Decided to go for Modwave Native after all, it’s just a cool and unique instrument.

Passed on Blackhole though. It’s a fantastic reverb if you like warm shimmery long tails. I’m not the biggest fan there and prefer cold, glassy reverbs.

NGL, Bitwig’s Grid is looking kind of interesting. A modular DAW

Reminds me of Max MSP

The interesting thing here is that Bitwig is sort of like if you crossed Reaper and Ableton. But you can also drop Grid containers in the effects/instrument lane like the above and do all these funky routings. It’s kind of like if Kilohearts were to make something like Kushview Element as a snapin container like Multipass, and let you put other instances of Phase Plant in it.
