Post your covers! (2019-2022)

not much at this point because I don’t use GB … I even don’t use a software amp sim at all.

@terb I found that when going back over lessons that i have nailed on the fast are a wee bit harder on the slow speed. I then know that my full speed is not as clean as I think.

This is accurate.
Logic is capturing the sound you are recording through your interface. This makes anything happening BEFORE the interface is really important, and explains why people spend so much on microphones and preamps.

Once you’re recording signal into a DAW, it is recording the signal sent to your computer. If you put an effect in the chain before it goes to the computer, it will record that and you won’t be able to change it.

So someone like @terb who is using a Line6 effect to get his sound will be recording his bass with that sound. He can’t get rid of it with a click after he’s done. It’s printed with that effect/model.

People like myself and @T_dub who are recording into Logic and then using the built in models are recording our bass signal direct (or through whatever we want to use in front of our audio interface). We can then use Logic to put all sorts of effects on it, change them, get rid of them, etc. - and the original bass track is unchanged.

Everything in Logic is virtual and is being applied to the sound that you send to your audio interface.

When exporting individual tracks, you have the option of including effects or excluding effects. I’ve used this when sending tracks off to other engineers so that they have my FX option, but also a clean signal where they can do their own thing.

Great cover @LesterH! Billie Jean is a sore subject around these parts, one of the hardest lessons to get past while doing the course. You nailed it! :hammer: :hammer:

@JerryP thank you!

@T_dub - I can certainly tell the difference between the two Toby, and although the second recording sounds much cleaner, I don’t hear any distinctive bass notes being played.

When you recorded and mixed your first recording, did you create a “Master” track before exporting the finished file? The master track is also referred to as a master fade out track and will be the actual “mixed” track and allows you to further fine tune the total mix of sounds from all available tracks that were recorded. Just a question because I’ve made this mistake before when I tried exporting a music cover recording without using a master mix.

Keep on Thumpin’!

Thanks @howard this helps big time
Thanks for clarifying and explaining @Gio
And everybody else helping.

@Lanny the only difference between the two recordings, is I turned the AMP on the track OFF. I too had to listen to it, turning the track on and off to see if I could hear the baseline, and decided that I can hear it very much if the track is not muted, and I can’t hear the bass at all if I mute the track, so I exported again.

It might be possible to leave the amp on, and change the output levels as @howard described to still get a better version, but this was the first test that I did. I will play with it more and see if I can get a better recording where it is more evident the baseline is there.

In my attempts to diversify my playing and knowledge of music, I have been recording either audio or video of a new song every day or every other day to share with everyone. I hope you enjoy there is no real mastering done here just playing through a song.

progressive grunge someone ?

Psychlona - Blow

This composition is interesting because, yeah, it could be decribed as progressive grunge and this is not common at all. it’s not extremely strange considering that grunge and stoner are pretty close (and progressive/psychedelic stoner is not rare), but anyway, still not very common. and also the shuffle is not very common neither on this musical style.

Sound-wise it’s the bean Bass POD again (+FX84), I wanted to try it with a more agressive tone than for my last cover, before I switch back to the Pro. that’s a pretty nice and lovely little preamp, with that distinctive early Line 6 feel.

I play with alternating fingers the first parts of the song, and take the pick for the last part. I like a lot using different techniques to expand my expression range, and here the pick brings me almost some kind of mechanical overdrive ; not more level or saturation but it allows me to give a brighter attack which sounds way more agressive, more metallic than the smooth finger playing. The finger playing is still interesting IMO to bring a more organic, fat deep tone during the begining of the song.

The Yamaha SBV might have been a better choice for this song, I don’t know. When in doubt, it’s always Greenie.

@terb Great cover! I loved the tone for the song. You are relaxed and enjoying it and that is what matters most! Keep posting them up.
