such a solid bass line! great job
That was awesome JohnF! Needed a country in the mix today.
Thank you! It was cold and rainy outside, so definitely a good day to stay inside record covers. lol
Thank you. It’s something I’m trying to work on. And yeah, Tom Waits is a national treasure. ![]()
Thanks! Money definitely leveled up my raking game. ![]()
Thanks, Jerry! Absolutely…we need to keep the classic country in the mix here on BB.
Thanks John… much appreciated!!
Mercyful Fate - Into The Coven
I started learning this song over a year ago. At first i was stuck at like 50% speed. I put it down for months, and then finally picked it back up a couple months ago. That first day I cranked it up from 50% to 75% after one playthrough. Then it quickly went up to full speed. It’s been ready for a while, just never put in the time to record it. This is take 1.
EPIC ![]()
Spacing out my covers a bit…
This was one we worked on over the weekend. It takes me way back to when I was a young hooligan in the late 80s!
Sex Pistols - Holidays In the Sun (Bass cover)
This song was incredibly fun to play and it has inspired me to learn how to use a pick. I watched the B2B Masterclass lesson again this morning. ![]()
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
Time for a change of pace with some Indian raga inspired, harp-led spiritual jazz from Alice Coltrane. This is the title track from her incredible album Journey in Satchidananda.
The bass part (originally on upright bass) is simple - just variations on a repeating line - but the bass is the main timekeeper on this track. As you’ll hear, the drums are basically a suggestion and there’s a drone from the tanpura, so it’s the bass that is there keeping everything together. So for my recording, when I remove the bass and try to play along, it’s really easy to fall out of sync with the band.
I tried with a metronome but the song is too fluid for Moises, so it keeps getting lost. In the end, I had the original bass playing in my headphones, which made improvising hard as my brain kept trying to stick to the original part.
I’ve been playing a lot of songs with really repetitive basslines recently, I find its good practice to get in to a state where you just play the same thing for a long time. I’m working on some “normal” songs too, I promise.
Love this album!
Well done you on this!
Nice. That’s part of our set list. It’s a floor filler ![]()
This is not my best cover, some of it isn’t in my control, some of it is that I’m just not quite good enough yet. It’s a little bit past my comfort zone, but I wanted to show off my new BBPH. Unfortunately my stem splitter put a lot of Peter Hook’s bass line in the single guitar track, so I had to compete with the original bass track for a lot of it. The mix is wonky because I’m trying to be heard over the original. I flubbed a couple of notes, I think with a few more weeks of playing it, I’d have it nailed. This one is going in the bucket of songs that I need to revisit and rerecord. I’m doing one of those tomorrow.
New Order - Ceremony
Very nice faydout! BBPH sounds great.
Certainly levelled up the video!! Well played too on this classic song!
Not a song I’ve heard before, @Professor. Well played!
Nicely played, @DirkTungsten!
Ooh, I like this, @faydout, gonna add this to my iTunes playlist! Well played! I also love the backlit video, feels very Sisters of Mercy / Mission… ![]()
Most excellent, @JohnF, more Emmylou Harris! I think you’re a one man Emmylou bass covers machine!! ![]()
Well played, @Vader! I like the tone that you’ve got here!
Dude, it takes you back to the late 80s. It takes me back to the summer of punk, the Queen’s silver jubilee ![]()
That’s pretty cool, @THRILLHO! Well played!!
Well played, @faydout. Moises is good, but often can’t handle higher bass notes, it’s frustrating!!
Well played, @Mktony32!
Thank you, @JohnF!!
That’s what we’re hoping!!
The Calling - Wherever You Will Go bass interpretation
Learning the bass line for this song for an open mic I am doing with a colleague in June. Nice and simple, it’s an exercise in restraint.
I doubled the bass track in GarageBand and added a ‘vintage tube amp’ sim to one of the tracks to help it cut through.
Dingwall D-Roc - BOSS ME-90B - Focusrite Scarlett Solo - GarageBand
Great listen! I enjoy hearing the soundscapes you create. So much talent here in this thread!!
Thank you Jerry. I’m frustrated because I had to compete with Hooky’s 1200S through most of it. The one I’m doing tonight has all of his bass removed, so you’ll actually get to hear it.
Thank you, yeah. By the time I was sitting down to record it I was already frustrated because of the stem splitting thing. None of the takes I got were where they should have been. I just grabbed the one with the fewest mistakes. I’m doing another Peter Hook line today, so I’ll still get to show off the new bass but I really wanted that song. Hopefully something will come out in the next year or so that will give me better control over what gets removed (or I’ll just have to find a band and demand we do that song
).
Rip-X is great for that now. You can come in after the fact and move parts between stems.
