hadnt heard of this one so had a look. nice looking bass but tooooooo much spends for me im afraid. thankfully ![]()
Ah, I remember. That is a sweet bass to play.
well im just back from my fender loving mates house, and i can confirmā¦ā¦ im sticking with the ashdown ![]()
we tried both using his amp and pedals, different settings and i cant tell the difference between his fender precision and my ashdown P/J in P setting. he explained that hes a fender lover because of his punk heroes, JJ Burnel etc so just wanted the same equipment. he said you either go down that route, or just play something a bit different and not follow the crowd, which is where i place myself.
iāll maybe cast an inquisitive eye over anything that comes along of interest, but im not looking specifically any more and im not a ācollectorā, so would only buy something on a one in one out basis i think.
i was interested in the different sounds his tech21 pre-amp made tho going into an orange head, so i may have a look into a pedalboard and the odd pedal, although i really ought to concentrate on playing it better before p1ssing about with different sounds. stillā¦.. whatever makes you pick the bass up is good eh? ![]()
thanks all, ill still be watching this thread with interest, and also any recent āpedal threadsā.
cheers
Thatās nice. Iāve almost pulled the trigger on Ashdown a couple of times. Let us know how it is.
For the record, when I had a custom bass made it is a thin neck with a 42mm nut and 16" radius
well ive had it a few months and probably not appreciated it enough. i thought of it as a nice pink bass that would do me until i found a decent dedicated precision, butā¦ā¦ see above ![]()
my mates a seasoned bassist whoās played in many bands over many years, and he rates it.
im not very good at having an ear for quality, so tend to rely on the experts, so if it looks good and gets the nod from those that know then im happy.
ashdown do 3 basses i think, a short scale and one with a soapbar pickup, but mines the PJ version.
More money to buy a big amp. ![]()
i have a rumble 100 anyway, it never goes past minimum volume or the house shakes ![]()
Thatās a great place to start and loud enough to play with friends (to begin with).
I still have mine.
Yep. 90% of the time there wonāt be a big difference at all, and certainly none any crowd would notice. The J pickup on a P/J is all benefit and no real drawbacks, unless itās a bad pickup.
that being said, do you think its worth āupgradingā the P pickup for any reason? seymour duncan maybe? i guess ive already identified i cant tell the difference, but if i can still make it the best version of what it isā¦ā¦
If you are happy with it, nope - lots of outstanding stock pickups out there and maybe the Ashdown has them.
I wouldnāt consider swapping out the stock pickups in either of my current basses, for example- they are great.
Really the only reason to mod an instrument is if there is something you want to change. Fender stock pickups are a good example; itās very easy to do better. This isnāt true for all brands.
ok thanks. FWIW ive just looked at the bumph on mine and it just says theyre āPJ Alnicoā.
Well, considering your stable, I wouldnāt either, ![]()
I wouldnāt either. Unless you know what you want out of it.
If you are doing a lot of drives and gain then some hotter pickup may help getting that crackling tone but in general, itās the battle of mid focus or clarity.
While Iāve not tried all of the pickups, Iāve tried most and in the end I only prefer very few aftermarket models and they are very specific in their personalities.
lol exactly ![]()
I know Howard likes his SBV pickups, but I donāt have one of those. The 734 pickups are fantastic. Not quite as good as the ones in my new BB P bass, but theyāre pretty terrific.
These are perfect answers for my wife, sheās very happy to hear āstick with what youāve gotā ![]()
Now ā¦..for the full house ā¦.. should I buy a pedalboard with pre-amp, tuner, compression, distortion etc?
Or more curtains and paint for the house? ![]()
Gotta play the long game here. Get the curtains and paint now. Build those wifey points up now. Then when youāre ready to put that pedalboard together and itās gonna get expensive (it is), youāll already have the points banked up to just get an eyeroll or side eye instead of an argument.
Tbh, Iād just save up and buy a Helix LT. Itās $900 (new, Iād buy used and save a couple of hundred) but youāre going to go past that number putting a smaller board together by the time you factor in the board, power supply, then the pedals. Much more capable than a few random analog boxes. Lots more choices and options for effects.
Yeah the BBPH is gonna be a real solid stock pickup ![]()
Honestly I have liked the stock pickups in every Yamaha bass I have owned. The guitars are more of a mixed bag; the Revstars are great but the Pacificas can be hit or miss. The current Pacificas are very good though.
My 735 is pretty good. Bit on the vintage side but good punch.
The songs Iām doing this weekend are all Hooky songs because of it. Iāve got Switch by Siousxie and the Banshees next weekend (tbh, I could record it now) and that bass sounds incredible doing that song. Not so much the MBV song Iām working on, the 734 sounds better.
