Recreating New Order's "Blue Monday" drum patterns

and the original is better

As an 80s pop fan I’d agree

I just went back and watched the YT video for Tears for Fears’ original version and it just feels
wrong. Fast upbeat tempo and synths while being very melancholy with the lyrics and video.

That conflict is part of what makes it great and drives home the theme. Outstanding use of synth pads too.

You’re American I think @kamikos so I’m guessing unlike me you didn’t grow up listening to and obsessed by British 80s pop synth based music. Buying albums from Woolworths and then scouring car boot sales for other records.

I have an overly sentimental attachment to this music even though my more mature listening tastes can see the issues with some of it. But it’s still my preference, as so many other memories are indelibly associated with it. I’m not unique in this respect.

You’ll have music from your local radio growing up that I’ve never heard because we both grew up pre internet.

I’m also amused by @K_Miller gatekeeping the Gary Jules interpretation as if it’s the definitive version.

The actual music in the song is fantastic with the contrast between the percussion and the melody versus the super dark pad. And then with Orzabal’s vocals over it. Masterpiece

I didn’t like much of their stuff (basically that song and Pale Shelter) but as an electroindustrial/goth/post-punk kid I loved that song.

Since a couple of other songs have been referenced in this thread, I’ll share this one that I was reminded of because of their drummer. I think it fits in. The Limiñanas, a cool French band with a Spanish name. They’ve been around for quite awhile.

I am, and I typically love TFF’s stuff. I basically grew up on 80s new wave. I think in this case with this one song going back to the original after the Gary Jules version just doesn’t hit the same anymore. It’s kind of akin to the song “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. After Johnny Cash did his cover, even Trent Reznor was like “that song isn’t mine anymore”.

OMG, I never knew that, listening to it for the first time.
This is kinda how people must feel like who for years thought Marilyn Manson’s Down in the Park is the original.

I think the original hits way harder.
