Right hand wants to follow left hand

Patient: “Doctor, after the operation, will I be able to play the violin?”

Doctor: “Yes, of course.”

Patient: “That’s funny, I never could before.”

I think you totally understood and this is a great exercise to work on my finger independence! Thanks!

Only in the U.S. Here in France, and I assume the rest of Europe, almost all non-EVs have manual transmissions. Youngsters take their driving training with manual trannies. 80 year old grannies still drive them. My car, the high volume Renault Clio, doesn’t even offer an automatic. In the U.S., a car with a manual tranny gets crushed at trade-in time. Found that out back in '89.

What I noticed (again) just now as I threw in a short practice: when I focus on fretting with minimum viable pressure (MVP) I immediately start plucking very softly and when I pluck harder I also fret harder. Kind of the same dependency between left and right hand.

Maybe we can come up with an exercise for that together? Any ideas?

What kind of setup are you using, amp? Headphones?

If it comes down to the 2 choices choose the softer one for now. Fretting hard is not the way to play or develop any kind of speed.

I just noticed something. Just using 2 fingers on my left hand walking down the strings E to G. In my head I call out ‘In’ (for index finger) and ‘dex’ for middle. When I start to come back up the strings, my plucking changes. Doesn’t matter how hard I think about it, I can’t stop it happening.

Try this for fun. On the left hand hold thumb index. On the right hand hold thumb middle. Now swap the thumb positions on each hand at speed. How many times can you do this before they synchronise. I get about 4.

Edit: I’ve just tried walking with 3 fingers, and instantly started plucking with my ring finger. My brain isn’t wired right.

Nah. That’s pretty normal.

Nothing wrong with 3-finger plucking.

If i could actually get 2 fingers to do what i want. I find myself sub consciously double plucking so that my fimgers get back into sync. And if theres a ratatat type fill in the beat, i might even single pluck, the ratatat.

I’ve never seen my dad as frustrated as he was trying to teach me to drive stick. I must have stalled his car 100 times at a 4-way stop sign. It took us a good 30 minutes to get through that intersection. I learned the lesson he didn’t and taught my boys to drive stick out on a country road without the added pressure of 3 other cars waiting for you to get your shit together.
