"Share some good music" Friday

I respectfully disagree on who “invented” punk

Oh, yeah, I knew I was inviting controversy to say anyone is “the” inventor of anything musical. So you won’t get any argument from me. And now I know about Link Wray, so that’s good.

eh—I tend to call that “alt-surf”

Good gravy that’s a great song, forgot about that one

I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate (get the picture) musical genre characterizations.
I know what you are saying to that…“hey, tell us how you really feel”.
If I had a record store everything would be alphabetical.
I don’t like one particular genre nor do I like all of one particular genre any more than another one. I like good music that I like.
Analogy - “I like IPAs” - nope, I like(d) good ones, and other beers too. (Don’t really both with beer anymore but that’s another caloric story),
I hate putting things in buckets like that.

Genres are either so broad (rock and roll…go ask the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame what their definition of the sign on the door is) or so damn narrow (post punk alt shoegaze babymetal blues) that it really doesn’t matter (Jazz suffers this too).

Q: What genre of music do I like?
A: Depends, as long as it pleases my ears.

Q: What kind of beer do you I like?
A: Depends, as long as its good to my tasty buds.

Q: What kind of forums do I like?
A: This one

Humans get value out of naming and categorizing things to use in reference for description by comparison. It doesn’t have to imply rigid bucketing.

I like the Robert Johnson genre

Because I can put that channel on Spotify and play it all day, never hitting a song I skip past.

Can’t say that about other genres.

I grew up listening to WPLR, and any given day you could hear Marvin Gaye, Joan Jett, Ramones, Sabbath, Temptations, Righteous Brothers. They played good music and mixed it all together.

Tell that to the radio station programmer !

He is like the grand daddy of a zillion generes!

I always liked you Brian, This might be a big reason why.

Kinks are great. The Damned put out the first Punk recording in England about a month before Never Mind the Bullocks was recorded, they recorded Black Rose.

Thats why I always throw out the Guttermouth song Lyrics whey people start talking about Pre this and Post that and some kind of CORE label. If I like it, its Punk Rock, regardless if its Sex Pistols, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Anthrax, Sublime or Johnny Cash. Thats the only Pre, Post or Core that I need.

“Ska-Core! Snow-Core! HardCore! Homocore! AlbaCore!
I can’t take it anymore!”
“My core! Your Core! This Core! That Core! My Core!
I CAN"T TAKE IT!”

Exactly.

on Feb 25th, Vulgar Display of Power was 30 years old. It topped the billboard charts in America on its release.
I consider it one of the best albums of the 90’s, and I saw them live 7 times after its release.
3 of those times I saw White Zombie open for them. White Zombie’s first major release, “La Sexercisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1” was also another great album from the early 90’s and those two albums sure defined the 90’s. IDK how many new core’s were spawned directly from the two, but there were a lot.

Had I knows in early Feb that the 25th was the 30th anniversary of Pantera’s greatest album, I would have completed the cover I have learned, “Mouth For War”, the opening track on that incredible album, but I just realized today, watching YouTube, so it will have to be late.
anyway, great song from a great album from a great band that defined Metal in the 90’s

Next is my favorite song on the album.

This was Hollywood Palladium in 1992, there is a 100% chance I was there, walking backwards in the pit during this song.

If I recall correctly, White Zombie did open this show.
Sadly, the follow up album did not live up to the first, and Rob Zombie solo, eh…he is OK I guess, but I could never get into it.

Sean Ysealt plays Schecter basses. She is a Schecter artist with her own signature COFFIN bass.

Yeah, but f*ck those guys. They have been a problem from the beginning, and useful categorizations to describe music are the least of the worries with the AoR station asshats.

Plus, who still listens to radio?

This thread should be locked except for Fridays.

:stuck_out_tongue:

According to their website, White Zombie and Crowbar were there for that show.

I saw PanterA and White Zombie on:
13/07/1996; Concert at Starplex Ampitheater, Dallas, TX, USA. with White Zombie.

Eyehategod was the opener, it was called the War of the Gargantuas tour. I bought a cassette tape from some hippie called Strontium Rain by Zendik Orgaztra that I wish I still had lol. They sell for $30 now on eBay; I had no idea it was some commune farm/cult.

I saw PanterA… at least once more. I got to see Floods once, at any rate, and that was nice.

I used to have a 3DO game system with a game called Way of the Warrior that was a Mortal Kombat riff. It used La Sexorcisto as the soundtrack.

Maybe this thread has run its course and should be locked down for good!?! There is a new thread that seems to be popular… and two (bigger) threads for the same thing is probably doing neither a good job. What say you, @JoshFossgreen ??

Sounds right, I probably missed Crowbar however. Probably drinking in the parking lot before going in for overpriced beers.
Funny thing is, when that show occurred at the Hollywood Palladium in 1992, Overpriced beer was $5. They are probably $15 or more now.

Hell, I would play that just to hear the soundtrack. Such a good album, that I don’t listen to nearly enough anymore.

Please take note, I did post on Friday

Yeah, I feel a million and 30 years old.

Why should it be locked?

It’s old… it’s tired… it has, uhm, deteriorated… there is the “What are you currently listening to?” thread that does the same thing and isn’t “hindered” by the Friday thing…

Maybe it’s time to let this one go
