760FS stainless are standard. Never tried the nickel
Personally I would go for the brightest you can.
Short scale: will dullen the timbre
Flats: will dullen the timbre
these will add together.
I love LaBella Deep Talkin Bass strings on my shorty. Do yourself a favor and call LaBella before you order. Their tech line is awesome and I learned so much about strings just from chatting with them I would have ordered the wrong ones had I not called.
LaBella makes a short scale version of the gold flats branded for the mustang
I didn’t know that. Never looked at the Stang series before since I don’t have one. However, looking at the page for them, it looks like those are only for the vintage Fender Through-Body Mustangs and not the newer top-load only ones. So some wonkiness with the scale is likely going on, like with the Beatle Bass strings. They also state not intended for other 30” scale through bodies, but if the measurements work out, I don’t see why they wouldn’t work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yes, the La Bella Stang series is what I need to string through-body on the Wattplower. Stainless Steel “Reds” are on the way. They are a version of the Deep Talkin’ line. Length of silk at the ball end and string construction to handle that bend are the differentiators. Then, of course, wind length. Anyway, short answer for me is, only buy strings made for Mustangs. This does not include the DR Pure Blues or Sunbeams that I want to try elsewhere.
Jonathan Wong has tests of all the Stang strings except the golds which was helpful. Lobster has a short playthrough with golds. The LTFIs look really interesting but would only do top mount.
Watt plays D’addario Nxyls 40-95s on his. I’m not chasing his tone (haven’t really even listened for it), but it’s good to know those fit. He did replace the neck pickup on one of his Wattplowers with a Novak BiSonic/Darkstar which had me like, “Really? Tell me more!”
LaBella is super conservative on the advice it gives on usage of their strings. Near as I can tell, the Stang strings are the same as DTFs but a tad longer to accommodate the through body. They’re just strings. Nothing special about them, except the gold ones are brighter in tone.
I always roll my eyes at the LaBella advice. Never broken a string.
I think in this case part of it might be the 1.75” “flexible tail” for the through-body part. Who knows. Like Mat said, they’re what he needs to use for his Wattplower, so obviously there’s other uses. It would be interesting to see if the measurements work on my Beatle bass, as the silk to ball-end measurement is the same between the BB strings and the Stang strings. I just need to check on that 1.75” part to make sure the “tail” doesn’t sit on the saddles but down in the trapeze bridge. This is only because the BB DTB flats don’t have a gold, nickel, or super polished version like the Stangs.
These are made for the 28.6” scale Squier Mini Precision, but they say 31” medium scale in the description.
I have them on my mini P and I’ve recorded 2 cover videos with them so far. They sound fine to me. Check them out yourself. ![]()
I like the tones you’re getting in those. Nice work!
Thanks!!
