I was looking at picking getting one of those headphone amps earlier as well, might be less annoying to the rest of the household although at least not using headphones helps drown out the accompanying singalong
Unfortunately I live in small town southern America. We only have the one store. The next best likely place is a 3 hour drive away and they donāt list any basses on their site at all.
I bought that squier affinity pack as my first bass /amp combo , it was a really nice bass . Really a good playable bass .
Then I decided I wanted a ārealā fender p bass and bought a mim p bass , so the squier was kinda redundant and sold the bass and amp separately and almost got back what I payed for it ( the whole experience cost me about 50 eur ).
The mim fender costs about 4 times more than the squier, is that fender 4 times better? Noā¦.
Should I have kept that squier? Yes
Why am I posting this? I donāt know
Maybe just to tell you that that affinity was a really nice bass
Iāve got a trbx174 and can tell you that all of the trbxās are pretty different from each other in terms of their capabilities and feel despite them looking similar. I tried out a 174, 304, and 604 but the 174 was the one that I enjoyed playing the most. If possible, Iād suggest noodling a bit this weekend when you take the 2 in to the shop.
From what i hear, the 504 and the 604 are the most similar of the TRBX line. If you can get your hands on a 504, the 604 is pretty much the same with exotic body wood and fancy paint. Internals (AFAIK) are the same. Neck too.
Rest of the bunch are entirely different beasts. Try them all.
Noted, thanks to you both, Iāll try the 174 this weekend and ask them this weekend if they get the other Yamahaās in at all in which case Iāll just keep an eyeball on their site.
lol, well I appreciate the feedback. Iāll give it a try.
I owned a 604 for years as my main bass, and a 304 before that. Both are great, the 604 is a really fantastic instrument for the price.
The 604 is very similar to the 504, but alder instead of mahogany, and with a maple top. Pickups and neck are the same. Preamp is tuned slightly differently but not really noticable.
I love it so far. Iām thinking at some point Iām going to get my 300 into a good luthier and have a bone nut made for it. I just wish Yamaha still made a P style bass still. Also, my thought is to trade in my 174 for my 734 as my PJ bass.
That bass you can buy online sight unseen and wonāt be disappointed. Superb build quality and excellent electronics.
If you in the States you can call Guitar center and see if they can give you 15% discount itās a very doable discount. If not, PM me Iāll give you my GC rep contact heāll give you 15% off for sure.
There is a GC about 3 hours from me (I must have missed these guys when I was checking for more music stores) and it looks like they keep the 304, 504 & 604 in stock. Iām really torn between the translucent black and the dark red sunburst 604.
I am definitely going to make one of these a post B2B graduation present and thatās definitely worth a 3 hour drive to go try all these out.
Thanks very much for the heads up on GC and if I canāt talk them into that 15% Iāll give you a holler
Ouch! 3 hour drive can cost you the discount and more, lol. Donāt know about your gas price but around here itās almost $5.50 a gallon
Trans black looks awesome in person but black is black. Dark red is gorgeous both are fingerprints magnet. Pick the one you like first.
Thereās no penalty to just order for delivery if you donāt like it just send it back within 45 days. It only cost you a little effort to repackage certainly considerably cheaper than 6 hours worth of fuel.
Good to know, itās kinda hard to tell on screen but I was looking at Yamahaās main site and there is a video of James LoMenzo playing one and it looks utterly gorgeous.
Hahah, thank you. It might be tough but Iād like to be able to do it justice before I splash out and it will be some great encouragement to keep going.
I still havenāt bought my 734a (I want the matte black one) because I told myself that I had to earn it by not sucking anymore. Iām still working on that one.
haha, my thoughts exactly. I steamed through modules 1-4, had all the timing, the muting, using the right fingers on both hands etc down pat. (aside from Billie Jean). I started module 5 last night and came to a screeching halt at my actual current skill level. It was funny, because it wasnāt the cross string fret fingering that was tripping me up which I initially expected, it was the right hand keeping the alternating fingers when crossing the strings.
