Should I shoot my new bass? (Modding the Harley Benton MV-4MSB)

Never one french guy said that :joy:

don’t even understand what it’s supposed to mean :joy:

“die and retry” is a videogame thing. it means that you try one thing, and it doesn’t work. then you try another thing and it still doesn’t work. again and again until you find the one thing that works for you.

You are not really French, unlike these guys

I have been thinking about strings for the Offbeat, which would be short scale. Not sure what to do. It has a perfectly fine set of DR Hi Beams, but they are a bit bright, and really twangy with a pick, like Conway Twitty twangy.

Not sure which way to go.

D’addario makes 107 strings. not sure about short scales but I have one set of 107’s on one of my long scales and those are great strings.

Maybe try the GHS 3070 Brite Flats?

This is actually not bad, now put it through a chorus pedal. Adjust to taste by rolling the tone off a little. It will sound awesome, and overcome the natural deadening that happens with shorties.

In other words, fix it with a bit of gas. Perfect solution

What’s a good chorus pedal?

My favorite is the EHX Bass Clone. A lot of people also like the Julia, but I like the Bass Clone much more, and it’s like a third of the price.

Funny thing, I never tried a chorus pedal that I liked. So, I just never use a chorus. Never.

The only one I like is the analog chorus embedded on the Kork Poly 800 but that’s not exactly a pedal.

Juno 106 has a classic one too

true but I prefer the Korg one

I wish Korg were more reasonable with their licensing. I would love to own a softsynth version of a Poly six or Poly 800, but they only offer the Poly six (and Mono/poly) in Korg Collection, which is expensive, and they do not let anyone else model their stuff. And you cannot resell their stuff either.

I do own Modwave Native and it’s awesome. The M1 softsynth is okay too.

hmm, actually, maybe they are loosening up a bit, it looks like you can get each instrument separately now. Still kind of expensive but not terrible.

those Korg’s are all quite different, so, well it depends on what you want. The Poly Six sounds awesome in my opinion, it’s a synth I really like. It has this little violent MS-20 vibe.

I myself own an original Poly 800. This thing can sound amazing really, and the stereo analog chorus is a big part of it. but currently mine has some issues and it’s just collecting dust. Still a very interesting synth. Depeche Mode made a good use of it at the time.

That said I can’t imagine a case where I would like a chorus on a bass.

But it’s just me.

Understandable, though there are entire genres built on it

It’s more or less the sound of post-punk and a lot of shoegaze, especially late '80s.

Such an angry little synth and one of the most famous filters of any synth

I think the Poly six actually sounds way more creamy and refined than a MS-20.

Yeah and earlier, the ARPs. Vince Clarke had a 2600 IIRC.

Yeah exactly. That said I have a few friends who have a big pedalboard for bass, and actually that’s cool, no problem.

Just, for me it’s a compressor and an od-capable preamp and that’s it

But yeah a chorus is a thing, for sure.

totally sure  but that’s the same family for certain !

Oh yeah.

The MS-20 is closer to my vibe than a lot of the early analogs. The Pro-1 is right there, I just really love the super aggressive monosynths.
