Hello everyone!

My high school buddy needed a bass guitarist for his band so I bought a Gibson EB-2C and joined his band. That was 1966 when I thought that Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane) was the world’s best bass player. It’s so old now that I’m afraid to play it!

Now, after retiring from programming I am getting back into playing more. Several years ago I bought a low end Yahama RBX170Y. It’s very nice and I’m not afraid to play it (or modify it), but…

…when I tried the Ibanez SRMS805 5-string multi-scale (fanned fret) bass, I had to have one. So last year I got one for my birthday. (My Precious!) I was surprised at how easy it was to adapt to this different fret layout.

Please stop me before I buy more basses!!!

Wow! Do you remember how much you payed for it in '66?

What a cool instrument. Very different than the super modern Ibanez.

Do NOT be afraid to use it! My main acoustic guitar is a 1947 Gibson J45. It has lived a hard life, but plays like a dream. It took some work to get it back into shape, but your bass is gorgeous! And clearly was babied throughout the years. Unless it’s your retirement plan or kid’s/grandkid’s college fund, play the damn thing!

@JustTim what’s your experience with the SR300? This is the second bass I am thinking to buy. How is the pickup sound? Is it good for slapping?

New arrival: Warwick RB Streamer NT 4 in Honey Violin.

MEC active PUPs

Wenge Fingerboard. This needs a good oiling as it’s a bit dry and it looks like there’s some beeswax in the open grain from being polished in the factory.

Truthfully, I love my SR300. It’s super light weight, the neck is thin and fast, the components are decent, and it plays really well. The tone is good, very crisp and bright, a little light on the bottom end but that can be adjusted up.

My only issue with it is that it is VERY active, and there is no passive mode. It picks up every little bit of slop that I throw at it. You have to play really clean. If your finger is too far behind the fret, you’ll hear it, where you wouldn’t hear it on an equally spaced finger on a passive bass. It’s much more sensitive about that kind of stuff. Even my SR500 isn’t as picky as is my SR300.

But other than that, it’s a great bass that I love and will have forever.

Keep in mind, though, that the current SR300 sold is the SR300E, which has better electronics than mine. I have the precursor to that, the regular SR300, which was discontinued in favor of the SR300E in 2014 or so.
