Songs with THE BEST lyrics: GO

Ok easy ones are out of the way, time to get serious (and for me, with glorious/devastating memories attached).

New Order, Procession

I think this is New Order’s best song. This is from the period between Ian Curtis’ suicide and when they found themselves with their first two albums.

For me this song so perfectly captures the aftermath of one of the most important relationships of my life, my behavior, and the lack of impact it had on getting past something I couldn’t face. At the time is was gut-wrenchingly perfect.

There is no end to this
I have seen your face
But I don’t recognize all these things
You must have left behind

It’s a problem, you know
That’s been there all your life
I try to make you see the world without you
It’s just turned black and white

At night, it gets cold and
You’d dearly like to turn away
The escape that fails
and makes the wounds that time won’t heal
Alone, alone, alone, alone

There is no end to this
I can’t turn away
Another picture but the scene
It’s still the same

There is no room to move
Or try to look away
Remember, life is strange
Life keeps getting stranger every day

I try so hard but this attitude’s
A type that won’t subside
No matter what they say
Remember, heart beats you, late at night

Your heart beats you, late at night
Your heart beats you, late at night
Your heart beats you, late at night

New Order, Temptation

I think this is New Order’s second best song. And for me it was playing during the most important moment of the relationship I mentioned above, and captures the moment perfectly.

A heaven, a gateway, a hope
Just like a feeling inside, it’s no joke
And though it hurts me to treat you this way
Betrayed by words, I’d never heard, too hard to say

Up, down, turn around
Please don’t let me hit the ground
Tonight I think I’ll walk alone
I’ll find my soul as I go home

Up, down, turn around
Please don’t let me hit the ground
Tonight I think I’ll walk alone
I?ll find my soul as I go home

Each way I turn, I know I’ll always try
To break this circle that’s been placed around me
From time to time, I find I’ve lost some need
That was urgent to myself, I do believe

Up, down, turn around
Please don’t let me hit the ground
Tonight I think I’ll walk alone
I’ll find my soul as I go home

Up, down, turn around
Please don’t let me hit the ground
Tonight I think I’ll walk alone
I?ll find my soul as I go home

Oh, you’ve got green eyes
Oh, you’ve got blue eyes
Oh, you’ve got gray eyes

Oh, you’ve got green eyes
Oh, you’ve got blue eyes
Oh, you’ve got gray eyes

And I’ve never seen anyone
Quite like you before
No, I’ve never met anyone
Quite like you before

Bolts from above hit the people down below
People in this world, we have no place to go
Bolts from above hit the people down below
People in this world, we have no place to go

Bolts from above hit the people down below
People in this world, we have no place to go
Bolts from above hit the people down below
People in this world, we have no place to go

Oh, it’s the last time, oh, it?s the last time
Oh, it’s the last time, oh, it?s the last time
Oh, it’s the last time

Oh, I’ve never met anyone
Quite like you before
Oh no, I’ve never met anyone
Quite like you before

You never knew what I loved in you
I don’t know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody
You were hoping I might be

In my opinion it’s “I want you” by Elvis Costello.

It’s the ultimate breakup song, and I’m sure that anybody who had a not so good ending of a relationship will recognize himself/herself in it.

It took some time for me to discover the “true song” within that song, as I first heard it on vinyl.
In those days you did not skip within a song, and the first 50 seconds are a persiflage on typical cheesy breakup songs … and then it starts!
Thank god for the invention of CD players and the skip function

When I listen to it now, I feel catapulted back to all kinds of breakups. Back then I felt terrible, but now I feel bittersweet nostalgia. Those were the good old days, in hindsight

Again, if it does not work for you … go to 0:50.

Lyrics, in case you suffer from hearing loss - I marked the initial cheesy part (which reminds me of Taylor Swift songs )

[Intro]
Oh, my baby, baby
I love you more than I can tell
I don’t think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh, my baby, baby
I want you so it scares me to death
I can’t say anymore than “I love you”
Everything else is a waste of breath

[Verse 1]
I want you
You’ve had your fun, you don’t get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful, darling, you might fall

[Verse 2]
I want you
I woke up, and one of us was crying
I want you
You said: “Young man, I do believe you’re dying”
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways

[Verse 3]
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget?
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate?
I want you
It’s the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It’s the way your shoulders shake and what they’re shaking for
I want you
It’s knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
It’s the thought of him undressing you or you undressing

[Verse 4]
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
“I want you”

[Verse 5]
I want you
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark
It scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me, then we’ll let it drop
I want you
I’m afraid I won’t know where to stop
I want you
I’m not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down?
I want you
Oh no, my darling, not with that clown
I want you
[Verse 6]
I want you
You’ve had your fun, you don’t get well no more
I want you
No one who wants you could want you more

[Outro]
I want you
I want you
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I’m going to say it once again till I instill it
I know I’m going, going, to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you
I want you

More Elvis:

What’s so funny 'bout peace, love & understanding?

Doesn’t seem so hard… if more folks adopted this as a creedo, the world would be a better place.

Here’s a gem from John Lennon. The genesis of this song is Lennon was frustrated by fans picking apart his lyrics looking for deeper meanings. So he wrote a song made up of random phrases and devoid of meaning, And people still argue over it.

Helplessly Hoping

Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye

Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a goodbye? Or even hello?

[Chorus]
They are one person
They are two alonе
They are three togethеr
They are for each other

Stand by the stairway
You’ll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
Love isn’t lying
It’s loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

[Chous]
They are one person
They are two alonе
They are three togethеr
They are for each other

When they turn the pages of history
When these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow
We turned our gaze
From the castles in the distance
Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance

Cities full of hatred
Fear and lies
Withered hearts
And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons
Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering
The sacred halls of Truth
Ancient nobles showering
Their bitterness on youth
Can’t we find
The minds that made us strong
Can’t we learn
To feel what’s right and wrong

Cities full of hatred
Fear and lies
Withered hearts
And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons
Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise
Can’t we raise our eyes
And make a start
Can’t we find the minds
To lead us closer to the Heart

Marillion Sugar Mice

I was flicking through the channels on the TV
On a Sunday in Milwaukee in the rain
Trying to piece together conversations
Trying to find out where to lay the blame
But when it comes right down to it there’s no use trying to pretend
For when it gets right down to it there’s no one here that’s left to blame
Blame it on me, you can blame it on me
We’re just sugar mice in the rain

I heard Sinatra calling me through the floorboards
Where you pay a quarter for a partnership in rhyme
To the jukebox crying in the corner
While the waitress is counting out the time

For when it comes right down to it there’s no use trying to pretend
For when it gets right down to it there’s no one really left to blame
Blame it on me, you can blame it on me
We’re just sugar mice in the rain

'Cause I know what I feel, know what I want I know what I am
Daddy took a raincheck
'Cause I know what I want, know what I feel I know what I need
Daddy took a raincheck, your daddy took a raincheck
Ain’t no one in here that’s left to blame but me
Blame it on me, blame it on me

Well the toughest thing that I ever did was talk to the kids on the phone
When I heard them asking questions I knew that you were all alone
Can’t you understand that the government left me out of work
I just couldn’t stand the looks on their faces saying, “What a jerk”

So if you want my address it’s number one at the end of the bar
Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars
Blame it on me, blame it on me,
Sugar mice in the rain, your daddy took a raincheck

The biggest hit for the band….for a reason.

I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes

Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)

I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I’m becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

Can’t you see that you’re smothering me?
Holding too tightly, afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you

Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take

I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I’m becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me, with someone disappointed in you

I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I’m becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
I’m tired of being what you want me to be
I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
I’m tired of being what you want me to be

Numb, by Linkin Park
