Successful flight stories

As long as you got your ticket before 5/28/25 you should get free checked bags but Southwest did just take away the free checked bags thing for any tickets purchased after the 28th.

Maybe but for that price I think I can get this one with TSA locks on it

HAHA that’s what my ADHD task avoidance gets

I’ll quit procrastinating tomorrow. Lol, ADHD is a real pain in the as sometimes. I’d be screwed if I didn’t rely on watch timers and calendar events to run my life. Only way I’ve found to get shit done.

And you think you are safe? :joy:

Try flying to Bangkok or Manila with just a carry on, see how long you’ll be detained

I wouldn’t go with the case you cited. It has nothing inside, i.e., foam support for the bass body.

After all, if you want to give your bass a fighting chance to get where you’re going in one piece, invest in more than a bare-minimum case. Buy once, cry once.

Very true. I find that scaring the s*** out of myself tends to be effective. Oh yea I have a show in <2 weeks and I’m spending all of my time obsessing over flight details

Good to see the TSA knows how to have a little fun… A Little…

Maybe this is a dumb question but what’s the rental situation at bass camp (or nearby music stores)?

I was just in Bangkok with only a carry-on. Everyone was lovely to me

Singapore on the other hand. Sir, you’ve been “randomly” selected for additional screening

It’s a brilliant question. They mentioned they have gear for folks who can’t bring their own but getting replies to emails hasn’t been super quick and I’d like to play on something I’ve played at least once before.

I guess worse comes to worse if my bass gets exploded there is a backup.

Aaaannnddd of course I messed my name up on the ticket… I mean why the heck not? :man_facepalming::melting_face:

It could be cheaper to buy a second ticket and “seat” the bass next to you!

Or have it sent per DHL?!

Yeah, but that is somewhat akin to checking it as baggage…

Yeah. But let’s be honest: @MattyD seems not have expensive basses, and most basses are sent by DHL anyway when you buy them.

So, no difference (providing he has the right box to ship).

For the price of an extra seat he might even be able to buy a new low cost bass (Harley Benton!!!) and let it sent to his destination…

Yes, sure, buying a really cheap bass to bring along, or buying a cheap bass and have it sent to the destination, are all legit options; but options with a lot of compromising nonetheless (a bass never played before, poor setup, crappy strings, …)

Also, having to lug around a bass in a cardboard box isn’t exactly a lot of fun either (seriously cramping my style :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

Air travel with your bass sucks - there are basically no really good options; all you can do is try and minimize risk, cost and inconvenience as much as possible

Again, taking off the neck and packing the bass and tools in a checked suitcase is a decently inexpensive option.

However, checking a bass in a flight case is a better (if more expensive) option as it provides a great means of lugging the bass to a venue in the destination city.

Yea I was thinking about just buying one there. After buying my ticket last night and the price of that I think I’m resigned to bringing the Steinberger and rolling the dice on doing the carry on thing. Maybe I’ll bubble wrap the neck if I get paranoid. Wonder if there are regs on playing with a headphone amp in the airport…

You can alway remove the neck and put the disassembled bass in your luggage. I did this twice per week for some time, when I was travelling a lot…
Just need to do a setup after, but this will become like a proper meditation after a few times
