Ahh I get that and no offense meant (I’m sure from John either), but the meta point is we all have things we like to do for ourselves and that’s okay (within reason).
We manage our finances by having joint accounts and individual accounts for different things. Any pricey, personal things she does for herself come out of her personal accounts, just like all of my music stuff comes out of my personal accounts.
We have not yet decided how we’re going to break down the cost of grad school, but it will almost certainly be funded at least in part by join funds. She earns roughly double what I do, and contributes to the joint funds reflecting that.
For a variety of reasons, these aren’t arguments worth having in our household…
Years ago, I walked into my office and turned on my very expensive, meticulously color-calibrated CRT monitor. And…
Nothing.
It was unexpectedly and thoroughly dead.
I was in mid-cuss when the phone rang. My dad was calling to chat. He was long-retired from his own business, and he liked to hear how mine was going.
After I bemoaned the fate of my dead monitor, he simply asked, “Do you have the money to buy a new one?” And I replied that I did.
He then said something that has seen me through many a business dilemma since that day: “A problem that can be solved with money is not a problem.”
Of course, if resources do not exist, the option of spending money is impossible. But if funds do exist, and no negative repercussions can arise from having spent it, it is a viable solution that keeps things moving - and everyone in a much more productive mood.
That said, just go play the sucker, already. Doing that will tell you all you need to know. ![]()

After seeing what goes into setting Intonation on a Ric I’d be a hard pass despite some of my favorite Bass Players having them🤪
Ymmv however, we all have our own moments of self torture for the love of the game
The older ones are a PITA for setting up overall. Primarily due to finicky truss rods of old and terrible Version 1 bridges.
The newer 4003s are not in this camp, and have solved for both, no different than any other bass.
If Stars Wars took place in the music universe, then the B.A.S.(bass acquisition syndrome) would be strong with you.
Test drive it first and then sleep on it.
In Japan a couple weeks back, the store where I made a few purchases from had one of my dream basses on display, the Fender American Vintage II jazz bass in sea foam green (which is now discontinued). I had to have it! If I didn’t buy it, it was most likely my last chance at a brand new one, compounded by me being a lefty.
I played it and was thoroughly underwhelmed.
As I said, play it first. You might not even like it.
I’ve just done a quick bit of research on Reverb and eBay to check out the availability of Rickenbacker lefties. Holy sh*t, they’re expensive! £3,995 (US$5,387) for a 2012 4003, described as “mint” and “ultra rare”!
When it comes to Reverb and eBay, they certainly aren’t giving anything away.
And condition is always sub-standard of the seller’s description.
@JaydeeBassMafia that’s always the problem with those sort of places. The thing with eBay though is that the buyer is offered pretty decent protection against duff items, especially when paying with PayPal.
Reverb protects buyers very well. Its fees are high, but many find the service worthwhile for its marketplace selection and customer service. .
I sold a loaded Carvin bass back in January for $865 on Reverb,…..I had bought it from my local Guitar Center’s used gear section a decade earlier for $400. The buyer drove from the next state over met me in person, no shipping.
I plan to sell more gear soon on Reverb.
Hahaha - I know this problem!
I made it a habit to hide my “illegal” stuff under the bed … to be specific: under her side. There is a guitar and a bass she doesn’t know anything about.
And there is space for a Reverend Lil LinhBacker Bass (I measured it today) ![]()
My wife has 50 pairs of running shoes to my 25 basses,…….and she wants me to ‘move some basses’,….
.
UPDATE:……(five of my basses can currently be found on Reverb, GET YOU ONE!)
Edit: We’re cool.
I explained the situation, and he understands. We’re going to message again after Christmas to arrange a time for me to test drive it. Will let you all know.
I disagree and have never found this to be true do my purchases. Although I to ask a lot of questions before buying.
I’ve had it happen to me a few times. Some involving necks that needed more work than seller recognized. I’ve had sellers ship me the wrong bass, some were damaged because the seller didn’t know how to properly ship an instrument. It might not happen to you, but it could.
