There’s not a very active community on TalkingBass, is there? Or am I missing something?
There are something like 150K talkingbass.com users. The forum there has several sections dealing with the usual suspect topics (basses, gear, etc.), too.
Still, users aren’t as active as they are here or at talkbass.com.
Wowzers.
Josh has fostered a loyal and loquacious bunch of forum users, presumably because everyone who signed up here was in the same beginner boat and shared the same issues/had the same-ish questions/needed peer support.
TalkingBass users are much more diverse in their bass journeys because the courses offered by Mark are as well.
I think it’s apparent B2B has a more cohesive forum.
i wonder if mark ever gets tired of the serious straight guy tag. i actually find him to be very friendly and entertaining. i mean, not compared to josh or anything, but i wouldn’t say he’s dry and boring. especially during his live hangs where he likes to joke around a bit.
I do not equate the academic style with boring! I’ve never said anything like that
I just have good memories of my student days and immediately notice a good and charismaric lecturer.
I perceive Mark as a nice person and at the same very concrete teacher. Besides, my irl bass teacher has similar features.
woops sorry i wasnt implying that you did. i just think overall thats the impression people give about him.
This applies to me. I watched quite a few bass channels before deciding on B2B, and then researched what courses were best. I don’t recall seeing a negative review for B2B, and the positive reviews were really positive especially from older people. I also like Mark’s videos and saw good reviews, but I chose B2B as I was starting from the point of never having picked up a bass before.
I can’t really find fault with B2B in terms of how it’s structured. I’m doing the beginner Drumeo free trial and not sure I’ll sign up. Little things, like not being counted in to play a beat, are frustrating and so I think the way Josh presents B2B is outstanding in comparison.
I’m here to help people and give the odd person a hard time ![]()
Ohhh so talkingbass and talkbass are not the same thing. Might need to give talkingbass a fresh look.
Oh yes. It’s easy to tell the difference, talkingbass has a friendly Englishman and is not a blazing trash fire full of bad advice ![]()

If you are talking about the “Practice” mode that uses SoundSlice then there is an option to play a count in.
Thanks, I’ll definitely do that. I’m talking about the actual lessons with the presenter. But I do admit I’m quite fussy with how lessons are presented ![]()
I tried SBL for a year and used it ~3 x’s found it useless, so I canceled. There was to much blah blah blah, just wanted to get to the learning.
Similar experience here. But some people find it useful. To each his own.
I have taken courses with StudyBass no chit chat no messing around no selling just pure fundemental bass teaching and he has three levels I have not gone thorugh th 2 or 3 level (yet) but the level 1 stuff is great…
