I’m currently working through the Groove Trainer volume 1 course and really enjoying it. When I first purchased the course the backing tracks were drums tracks.

Mark has recently updated volume one with full instrument backing tracks. These make it so much more fun. If you have already purchased the course but don’t have these tracks please go and download them.

I can see me having a lot of fun in the future by jamming to these quality backing tracks. I believe he will be adding full tracks to volume 2 in the near future.

Thanks Vince. Yes, the new updated tracks for vol 2 are coming soon (just mixing them). Also worth mentioning that the tracks are embedded below each video as well as the downloads. So you can play to full band, drums and bass or drums only.

Ok dumb question which course is ‘Groove Trainer’ I google that I get the Groove Trainer tool but can’t find a course called groove trainer

I’ve also spent some money on SBL courses, but I don’t have the patience for some of them. They are masters of turning a 10-minute lesson into 20 minutes.

Hey @markjsmith, I am really enjoying the Groove Trainer and Technique Builder courses, but I have a question about the etudes in the Technique course. You say to get the etudes up to speed before trying it in different keys, but what speed would you recommend before doing this and eventually moving on to other etudes? Also when you recommend alternate picking would raking be okay? It feels much more natural to me.

I probably need to clarify that in the course. When I say ‘get it up to speed’ I’m actually just using a turn of phrase. I’m meaning ‘once you get it under your fingers and feel confident playing the line’. There’s no requirement for playing a specific tempo. The etudes work at any tempo. Yes, you can ramp up the speed if you’re looking to increase your dexterity but there’s no target.
You can integrate raking if you want. I generally specify strict alternate picking simply to get your alternate picking up to a good standard. You should be able to alternate pick and rake to an equal level. The good thing about alternate picking is that you can track your picking pattern much easier. It’s easier to know if you’ve strayed from the pattern by checking waypoints. The fingering in both hands should be identical every time you play it. Otherwise you’re, in effect, learning a totally different line. Switching just one finger in a whole line means it’s a different physical pattern. It should be consistent regardless of the raking/alternate picking. Just find one that works and stick with it (for a specific line)

Thanks for the clarification and quick response! I’m a bit of a completionist so I wanted to make sure I hit a good tempo before moving on, especially since I know lessons can often build upon each other. Probably something I need to work on since it can often be a hindrance and hold me back sometimes :sweat_smile:. You’re explanation for alternating makes sense, plus will get me out of my comfort zone some which is good. I highly recommend the courses to anyone else on here considering it. I’m not far in and can already see the improvements in playing songs outside the lessons.

I am doing Chord Tones and loving it, I have learned so much, it is intensive. But I can now do the cycle of fourths all round the fretboard, and doing it with the various arpeggios and fingerings is great practice for my arthritic hands. I have just got Groove Trainer and will start that soon, in conjunction with Chord Tones.

I have to say, for myself Chord Tones (as well as some other books on music theory) has opened up the world of music and how it is constructed, and the interval training and quite intensive exercises have really helped my ear training.

@markjsmith After reading this and starting Groove Trainer, I realized I was in a little over my head. I bought Bassic Fundamentals because it seemed like a deeper dive into the fundamentals, even if there is some overlap with BassBuzz. I am happy I pivoted to Bassic Fundamentals. It may not be the move for everyone, but it has helped me learn the notes fretboard. Josh does a great job getting us going and playing real songs. However, he does not focus on learning notes nearly as much as you do in the Bassic Fundamentals.
