Technical Question

I have a strange problem with one of my basses. When I fret the 5th note on the G string, it sounds kind of dead. Yet the the 4th and 6th frets still sound normal and my tuners say it’s in tune.

Any idea what could be wrong.

What kind of bass is it?

That’s awesome. Thanks. Never thought to add weight now I can experiment with it the next time it happens. Thanks again @Mike_NL

Thanks @Mike_NL . I’ll check that out. Didn’t realize it was a common problem.

I had that problem on one of my guitars and it turned out to be the fret leveling problem. Most likely the 6th fret. All you need to do is get a something that is level that goes over the 5th, 6th and 7th fret, and where the G string crosses those frets. If the tool rocks ever so lightly then the fret is not level and needs to be corrected. There is a YouTuber Know Your Gear that has a video on how to find and correct the problem.

I have temporarily resolved a similar problem on 3rd fret of E string by attaching a magnet on the tuner. It was about 100grams and did it for me…
