Yes, on piano you generally play the melody with the right hand and the left plays a supporting role with bass lines and accompaniment.

It does bring up an interesting question though: why do we even enjoy music?

I did read the book “This is Your Brain on Music” some years back. Some of the conclusions they mentioned were not unlike the above posts.
