The Reason People Don’t Get Better at Bass

We waited this long for that…

Was hoping for something more juicy, like why weren’t you practicing - eg couldn’t be bothered, too tired, nothing interesting to practice.

I like to add this wonderfully written article by Andrew Pouska

I really love the way he looks at music (and life in general)
Investing time in yourself and your playing makes a massive difference

This makes me curious what a bass instructor’s practice looks like compared to B2B. What are you playing outside of songs? What does your warmup look like? It would make a pretty interesting forum post or YouTube video!

I don’t know where to write this, I’m referring to my previous posts in this thread. And I hope maybe it can help someone during harder moments…

Okay, everything I wrote above is no longer relevant.
With this band thing, it’s not a failure after all (despite the absolute slaughter that was the first rehearsal, afrer which I really wanted to quit music) :see_no_evil::see_no_evil::see_no_evil:

Reality is dynamic, everything changes. The distance from despair to happiness is measured in an uncountable unit of time.

Practice does not make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

This is super important, because if you are practicing bad habits, they become permanent too and require effort to walk back. This is why you should only push yourself so long as you can maintain good technique.

I get that completely.
I started at university when I retired 2011 at 60. Different things kept getting in the way. Interest in different aspects had me waxing n waning - finding things within the modules to keep my interest and next year is my final year - it will have taken 14/15 years to complete my Arts n Humanities Honours Degree (Spanish language n Culture + Music) am both fluent in spanish and in music theory. The aim wasnt necessarily about getting a degree it was all about maintaing mental executive function. Now I am working on learning bass just for the hell of it :rofl::rofl: at 74.
