Yeah - I just wanted to give a warning at the beginning of the post, as I know that some people here are soft minded ![]()
luckily my brain is trending more towards smooth than soft
I just tested closed captioning and auto translate … it misses the poetic details, but it catches the general direction.
I like “[] you!” ![]()
Probably a good thing! ![]()
YT choked a lot on the automatic German closed captioning. No wonder why. ![]()
Hahaha, yeah! I found the translations quite amusing.
These are the original lyrics - I know you like to sing German stuff ![]()

Vielleicht kastrieren?
Vielleicht kastrieren?
Vielleicht kastrieren?
Einfach mal kastrieren…
Ha ha ha. Takes me back to Berlin in 1971. The parallel street next to the Kurfürstendamm was where the hookers worked. My g/f and I liked to wander that street. Lots of good humor! One of my favorite memories was listening to a Brit soldier trying to negotiate a price. He finally gave up and yelled at her: “Who do you think I am? A bloody Yank?” ![]()
LOL!
That really made my day - also a great title for a very successful song, at least outside of the US!!!
![]()
But we will not do English lyrics, EVER!
Only German. And one Dutch song, but with the nonsense title “van achteren in de batsen flatsen” - which sounds Dutch, but is in fact 50% nonsense.
Though: I would like to do some stuff in “bastard” French, but haven’t found the right singer for that. Getting the right singer is more and more of an issue for me.
In my opinion, the whole French underground music culture is great, in terms of avant garde even better than the UK.
But, but, but…I thought that’s what all Dutch is.
![]()
That’s also true ![]()
Plus Dutch is a subset of English, like German is, so in a way you’ll be doing English too!
English is easily the sluttiest of all languages - it’s got a little bit of everything in it
English is easily the sluttiest of all languages
Oh, don’t get me wrong! I love the English language. German has a more complex grammar but less words. English has more words and a simple grammar.
Both have advantages and disadvantages.
But what I really love are all those different dialects in the UK. This is the main reason I like “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch”!
I don’t wanna do English songs, cause foreigners singing in English are mostly embarrassing and therefore pathetic.
I think, it’s done cause of commercial reasons (larger market) and cause it sounds cooler (as most foreigners like the sound of English and don’t know how shallow the lyrics often are).
We have decided to NEVER compromise on anything, so market considerations are not a topic for us.
I do have this strange feeling that we will have a hit soon though (one can dream :-)), but it will be limited to about 10 people, mainly cause they fancy my park punk chick (or feel sorry for me)…
English is easily the sluttiest of all languages
I had to think about this and you’re right. Also: great sentence. I never knew that I would see the day where I would read this line ![]()
I tested Sonible Smart:Chain and decided to use it on all my songs. I will even redo my old ones with it.
What does it do?
It creates a raw mix to be used as a base line for the song (so it’s the first plugin on every track), by analyzing and setting parameters for level, gate, EQ, de-essing/de-harshing, input input rider, compression, saturator and clipping (I’m not sure if this is a limiter or just adjusting levels).
One thing I need to mention: I had several crashes using it, so it’s not 100% satisfying.
I save my work after every major change anyway, but you need to work accordingly, at least for this version.
The results are fantastic.
Again, it’s just a baseline for adding further plugins and modifications, but I noticed that all tracks became clearer, and especially the vocals became intelligible and present, but bass and guitar also benefited.
I tested Smart:Chain on “Ohne Halt” and on the punk version of “Tu es!” (with the newly recorded s#cky/f#cky/sh#tty and generally disappointing vocals of my park punk chick) … and there results were the same: a very clean and clear baseline that I could use to rebuild my effects.
The resulting mix always sounds more “professional”, so that’s really great!
Yes, it’s a tool for non-experts, but it removes a lot effort out of getting the basics right, so I can focus on bells and whistles.
This is the new version of “Vielleicht kastrieren?”, using Smart:Chain:
OK, got my new Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X.
It’s great, albeit: my ears get hot very quickly, the earcups are not as large as the others I have … and the cable makes noises when I move.
But soundwise they are exactly what I want: neutral! And it can be used with the free beyerdynamic HEADPHONE LAB, to emulate monitoring speakers (and set it to a reference curve).
Now I record, monitor and mix/master with these headphones:
- Superlux HD-660 Pro, closed. OK-ish sound, but makes buzzing noises with very low frequencies. First i was p#ssed off abozut that, but now I use it as an indicator for bass getting to low/loud (= buzzing) … and to have a reference for mediocre listening stuff. I also use it to record vocals.
- Fiio JT7, open, planar. Very very good headphones. It reveals all details, but lacks just a little in bass. Mastering-only. Cannot be used outside and for vocal recording.
- Focal Bathys, closed, bluetooth capable, has it’s own USB DAC too. This is to master for higher end consumer listening stuff.
- Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X, closed. My new everyday music production headphones. It works very good for recording vocals / instruments, but is also great for mastering/mixing. Many professionals use these headphones (when using closed models), so by using these I know that I target their reference…
Of course, I also test against IEMs, bluetooth in ears, my PA, smartphone speakers, laptop speakers and my stereo equipment.
Mastering s#cks!!!
I have 2 pairs of DT770 Pro 250 ohm headphones that I seldom use, since I seldom record vocals. My go-to headphones are a pair of the DT880 Pro 250 ohm semi-open. Super comfy for extended periods.
Super comfy for extended periods.
They are comfy, but I seem to have large ears, so the fit is not the #1, compared to my other headphones. Though: this is the first pair of over ears where I noticed this.
I looked at the DT770 Pro, but they were not neutral and generally inferior.
Also the DT880 Pro were not as good. And they are half open, so the background track would bleed into the vocal recording.
The DT700 Pro X are 100% the right choice, as I can use it for many scenarios. And with the HEADPHONE LAB software it’s even better. For DT700 Pro X it’s even better, as the software can be tuned to the production batch of this model.
In combination with my other headphones I should be able to deliver better mixes from now on, hopefully!
Also the DT880 Pro were not as good. And they are half open, so the background track would bleed into the vocal recording.
This is, in general, not a factor, at least with dynamic mics. I record vocals with my DT990 Pros (fully open backed) and there is negligible bleed. The “problems” here are vastly overstated online.
A super sensitive condenser may pick it up but even then, it’s a nonissue because the actual track you are mixing in to will utterly dominate the tiny bleed noise (which is, after all, the same track anyway).
The “problems” here are vastly overstated online.
I had issues when I gave my open Fiio’s to my park punk chick when she did her first vocal recordings.
When I listened to the solo’ed vocals, I was like “oh no!”. I heard the click track and the beats clearly.
But, of course, in the mix you don’t notice it, just like you said.
I am working on a very dramatic (ehm, dramatic sounding) ballad. It has really shameful & pathetically overwhelming orchestral parts, but then it also has very intimate parts, with whimsical whispering etc.
I wanted to make a tear jerker for the girls ![]()
So, for this one it would not be great to hear the click track. I need a clear voice in total silence, you know, to communicate absolute loneliness…
And here is where the closed headphones are absolutely necessary.
EDIT Oh, I almost forgot, very funny: I was listening to “Vielleicht kastrieren” all evening yesterday, using the open planars.
My girlfriend looked more and more furious, and I asked her what’s up?
She was like: “I’m sitting next to you and all I hear is F#CK YOU and SHUT UP!”
Good thing I got my closed DT700 Pro X today … until yesterday evening I did not know how to explain to her that my headphones collection is growing again, after I reduced to just a few…
Only German. And one Dutch song, but with the nonsense title “van achteren in de batsen flatsen” - which sounds Dutch, but is in fact 50% nonsense.
When reading this about things that sound like something, but are nonsense, I thought about this scene from Young Frankenstein.
this scene from Young Frankenstein
Hahaha! In fact, the “Enormous Schwanzstucker” is not far from “van achteren in de batsen flatsen”, topic-wise.
But we’ll NEVER know for sure, as we can only guess.
It’s nonsense, after all - the best of all senses ![]()
40 Hz - Sub bass - True sub bass frequencies make up the deepest pitched material listeners can easily perceive. Material in this range helps add extension, but must also be properly controlled.
Ah yes, the rule of ‘fours’ for Bass; four string anyway! ![]()
40hz to 400hz with a harmonic at 4k.
