Song 2 - "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Hey @skydvr,
I liked your cover, a couple little things you already know, besides those the tone and mix were good,
Keep up the good work,
Cheers Brian

Thanks. Started B2B. On module 8 now.

Appreciate it. There’s definitely a sense of accomplishment in putting the video out there, mistakes and all. A month ago I had said there’s no way I’m at a level to do and post these covers, but I decided to push myself and see my progress.

Hopefully it will make others realize there’s no minimum skill level required to participate and join the fun.

Same here. I think we will all be surprised and happy about how much progress this cycle will bring us. Video-ing yourself Ana watching back and learning from it is the most painful yet rewarding way to improve.

Super job and tone. @skydvr
Keep pushing on. We are supposed to make mistakes and learn. That said you didn’t make a lot and you know about them. Well done.

Okay, so some obvious places of improvement - I had some problems recording this song, which tested my patience, so this will do. I had problems keeping a steady tempo playing the song, and I missed a note during the solo part. The simpler the song, the easier it is to hear the little mistakes.

Anyway, I thought this was fun to play overall, and though this is not my favorite CCR song, grew more fond of it while practising. Good exercise for fretting hand pinky and muting.

And good job on the covers, those who have already posted their take

Well done. Few stumbles, but we’re all learning, so don’t stress about that. Was a great job overall. On “Another Brick in the Wall” I was stressed about recording issues too (about 5 hours of pain) and it hurt my playing. I think after a few more songs we’ll all have the hang of recording.

Did you have this song memorized? Or were the tabs just past your fretting hand? I didn’t see you looking anywhere else so wasn’t sure. If you memorized it, that’s awesome. I like the song too, but it’s not one of my favorites. Still enjoyed playing it.

Overall, great job and look forward to your next song.

Yeah, I memorized it (same with ABitW). Initially I thought I couldn’t bother memorizing the solo part, but ultimately found it easier than looking at the tab while playing, and it was pretty straight forward to learn.

Nice job @kowry.
As you already noted, I sensed some rushing of the beat at times, others you settled into the groove great.
Songs like this are deceptively harder due being simple looking but as you said, makes for needing to be tighter.
All good.

When we hit the 50th song, would be interesting to go back and do a couple of the intial ones to see how much we have improved.

By that time, we’ll be playing Hysteria as a warm-up exercise before moving on to the more difficult stuff :smiling_imp:

Nice job @kowry,
I think you did better on this one than the first song :+1:
The only thing i notice is you get a little anxious when its comes to the chorus bits of the song, you can here the tonal change in your playing, this will reduce over time as confidence builds.
Couple small glitches that you are aware of but all in all good job,
keep up the good work,
Cheers Brian

Yeah, I did this to play up near the fretboard for the upright sound. You’re right - I should have moved to the E - didn’t even think of that. I wasn’t entirely comfortable playing at that spot (I had to work to stop plucking the E “down” (towards the neck) which caused a lot of buzz), so I probably just locked my hand in place to get through it.

I agree - I wasn’t committed to memorizing this one, but I basically did, just from repetition of practice. These early ones are pretty simple (pattern-wise) once you play it a few times and get used to it.

Great job on your cover!

It’s great that you’re working on full songs so early in your learning, and putting it out there for feedback. Great job - keep at it.

I’m on module 15, and doing this challenge has definitely slowed down my progress in B2B. When I do have time to practice, I usually end up working on the challenge song, rather than the course. I need to do better at balancing those…

I decided to go for the Credence Clearwater Revival look… but my wife tells me I have to trim the beard today or else. So I’d better submit something now!

It is not pretty. But should be interesting for me in a few months to help measure my progress. Loving the course and the forum, but struggling over the last couple of weeks to balance my time… Probably bit off more than I can chew trying to record a cover at this stage of my learning!

Seems to me that I tense up when I start trying to record myself. Then timing goes a bit off. Then I miss a couple of notes… And its all a bit hesitant.

So main note to self after watching my own video: relax, enjoy the journey, and go for it!

You did a good job for a first cover and you have a good mindset about it. I think it’s great to get involved. Doing full songs really helps you improve as a bassist, but also increases your understanding of song structure. Sure you had some stumbles, but when you settled in the groove, you did really well. It’s not easy to relax when you are focusing on the backing music (temp), the tab, your left-hand, and your right-hand. Something we’re all working on. I think it’s more of a challenge to not have a thumb rest, but I’ve not actually tried that. I thought the tone of an acoustic fit the song well and that’s a cool little bass. Didn’t know HB made those. Might have to grab one. Overall, good job on your first cover and keep enjoying the journey and don’t forget to breathe. Looking forward to your next one.

Yeah, same here. The first time I recorded myself I became really self conscious. Suddenly I felt this pressure to “get it right”. Nonsense obviously, as I can try as many times as I like and no one will ever know. What helps me is not to look at myself playing on my phone screen, because that really throws me off.

When I wanted to record this song, I tried at least ten times before I gave up. The last three or four attempts, each one was worse than the previous one. Of course, when I did manage to play it decently, I had forgotten to press Record on either my DAW or my camera. So I tried again a couple of days later. Practiced the song once and then recorded it in one take.

If you’re anything like me, it will get better as you do it more often, so keep at it! Oh yeah, love the tone of that bass uke by the way :+1:

I knew I’d miss out something important.

and I recognise that pattern too!

Thanks guys for the encouragement and support. This community and this challenge are really helping me to enjoy the journey and push myself.

The bass is a lefty bass ukulele, and is a lovely little instrument. I had to file the fret ends a little to smooth them. And you can’t adjust the intonation on the uke, so I tune it so that it is equally nearly in tune on the open string and the 12th fret! Playing it with the NUX makes a very light, fun rig and I’m enjoying exploring the tone opportunities!
