What was the first song you learned on bass all the way through?

Disclaimer: not the first song you played perfectly, or played just like the original- but rather what song did you at least learn a version of, all the way through?

For me it was “Message in a Bottle,” by the Police. Always loved that song, and was thrilled when I could stumble my way through it for the first time.

Interested to hear where everyone started and what motivated you to learn it.

Control is an amazing movie, a must see. Rob Gretton’s actor steals that scene too (he’s perfectly cast  )

“Where’s my 20 quid?”
“It’s in my f*ck off pocket!”

The actors looked perfect, sounded perfect, and actually performed a few of the tracks.

OK, help me out here… Control is a fictional movie about Joy Division I assume?
l know the band name, but not something I was exposed to growing up. If that tune is any indication of style. I need to check them out

In a weird coincidence, just a few days ago I saw something briefly about that band- the lead singer committed suicide? Was it during their peak, or at some point later.

Control is an autobiographical movie about Joy Division based on Ian Curtis’ widow’s book and interviews with the band.

Disorder is absolutely typical of their sound. You should definitely buy the album it is on (Unknown Pleasures), it’s considered the seminal work of post-punk. Here’s the original:

That whole album is incredible.

This is probably their most famous song:

Yes, Ian Curtis committed suicide right at the band’s peak. A combination of his illness, anxiety, and depression over his affair and marriage. Extremely tragic.

The surviving members formed New Order and were of course super successful.

I would have to say the first song I ever played from start to finish, knowing the whole thing, with no misses, skip overs, or changing up so I could play would be
Paranoid by Black Sabbath.

That’s a pretty good first song @T_dub👍. I have had a look at it a few times but conceded defeat once Geezer goes off on his mad fills

His plucking makes it look way more involved.

If you have problems crossing strings while chugging (index on A string, Ring finger on G string, chugging 1/8 notes) while fretting octaves E-E (7th & 9th) and D-D (5th & 7th), then there is an 8 bar bridge that is a little tricky, and near impossible with out a compressor, otherwise all you hear is the upper octave on the G string.
Starting at
“Can you help me…”
Interestingly enough, you get a glimpse of his fingers and he is flying on the fretboard on that part, lifting fingers off instead of just deadening the string.

Ok @Mac
That is hard AF to do. I am almost thinking he was being a little theatrical in his performance in this one.
There is almost NO way to mute or or play that cleanly if you pluck like he is and have fingers flying off the fretboard. I think he may have been having fun with it being that it may have been a stage performance for video, and the song may have been a separate track mixed in.
I could be way the F off on this one, but try it, there is like ZERO WAY to do that if you don’t use some sort of controlled technique with one hand.

I wrote out the sheet for Paranoid in Mu-Score. There is not a whole lot to the song to write out, lots of copy paste. I can e-mail it to you if you like. I don’t think I can post documents like that here.
