One of the things that makes Kashmir perfect as a song is you can cover it in almost any style and it is still powerful

This is very subjective, but here are some of my choices. Very different styles. Each one beautiful in a completely different way.
I love anything by the Hu, and Shirley’s expressiveness on Milk always floors me
I have been listening a lot to the Hu this week. They are so awesome. Their music and videos are beautiful, and the rhythm is contagious. I have been reading about Mongolia and this just makes me listen to them even more.
I agree, Shirley’s expressiveness is beautiful in this video. She looks like a mermaid or a spirit from beyond. She draws the viewer in.
The “perfect” song is subjective and the examples posted here are are quite good… and to quote Vince Lombardi,
“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”
A song of which I am particularly fond is “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” I have listened to it over the decades and through the yootoobs I am able to hear many persons break down and isolate the unique parts and instruments. After listening to those I can certainly say that “this song” is greater than the sum of its parts. The individual musicians are amazing to hear them on their own and it is no wonder how the song speaks to me on many way and levels.
With respect to Mr. Lombardi, there is no “perfect song”… I did find this posting recently an interesting take on the subject, it is an excellent song:
If I had to pick one “perfect” song it might be this demo of pure expression by the man and the piano only before the post production by Carl:
Probably not my actual choice but the first thing that sprang to mind was Royal Blood - Little Monster.
That came to my mind because I remember driving home from work one day and the song was new, and came on the radio. One of the few times where I've heard a new song and cranked it up and said to myself "damn, they nailed it!"
I bought their album not long after that.
They got bonus points, at the time my son’s favorite movie was also titled Little Monster =)
edit: not sure why it puts my post in a side scroll
Difficult to narrow it down but the best crafted story song is Squeeze - Up the junction, it’s visceral.
Pulp’s Common People transports me to 1986, when I moved to Sheffield.
Reef provide the best riff song.
I’ve always been more fond of Transmission… but every song on that album is S tier imo. I’ll take your twofer and turn it up to 11. Perfect song on debut album, first track, nothing but net (Disorder would fall here too).
I love that song, but Shatner’s batshit version is now my favourite.
Jeez, I can never unhear that…
Cant get enough of this song … perfection in my eyes
Yeah in terms of a ranked list it would be:
#1 by a lot: Kevin Shields
#2: Martin Hannett
#3: Tom Scholz
#4: The many contributors to Steely Dan

Yeah that was a crazy good album.
Do you know the live version of “While My Guitar Gently Keeps” with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne on bass, Steve Winwood, Dani Harrison and an incredible Prince on guitar? That’s so good, I think I’ve been watching it 1000 times. This song is a very good example of excellence.
For me, the song I wouldn’t change a thing of, and which is my all time favorite is “Ziggy Stardust”. I love the whole album - that’s a masterpiece. The bass playing of Trevor Bolder’s is gorgeous. I’ve been trying to learn the bass line of “Ziggy Stardust” since the very beginning of my bass learning journey, and I still don’t nail it, but coming slowly closer.
Bauhaus’ cover is top tier, Bowie liked it better than his own version.
Nah, I stick with the original. ![]()
(the cover, in case others haven’t heard it…)
Yeah, even though I personally think that the song is way out of Bauhaus’ league and wished that they simply had let that be, I’m still curious about other opinions.
