This has all been super helpful! Still have a lot to learn but all the posts have pointed me in the right directions. Thanks to everyone for taking the time!
May the Bass be with you.
Anyone else getting basslines stuck in their heads? Like when I’m learning stuff and in the middle it’s like the song that never ends in my head. Go to sleep, wake up, it’s still going
At least it’s not full earworm songs like Call Me Maybe…
(I bet that’s stuck on you head now )
Yeah, some of that. Usually it’s songs that I’m working hard to get down in the moment. The one that trips me out a little bit is that some of my (in my opinion) better covers that I’ve done, I really like listening to them. Feels kind of like I shouldn’t, and like it’s an ego thing but I find myself throwing on some of my youtube videos while I’m working. It makes me want to rerecord some to try and get them perfect.
100%
I had to set a rule that the hour before bed, I do NOT play songs that I’m actively learning or writing. Only songs I already know, playing along with recordings, or general improv plinking around.
Hahaha. That’s funny
I’m going crazy with Bombstack by RATM, anytime I’m doing something, I realize that voicing at the intro.
Bom, ba dom… DING!
A lot of the songs I like to play I just transcribe in sections. I came up with a worksheet that i print out that breaks each measure into 8 parts (1and2and3and4and) and then i divide it up into Intro, Verse 1, Chorus 1, etc. then practice it section by section until I get a feel for the variations. Then, when I record, I don’t stay 100% true to the transcription, but by then I know all the variations and sprinkle them in. Here is the first page of a song I was transcribing today that I’ll record this week. Not sure if other people do something like this. I use upper case for the lowest octave and lower case for a higher octave.
This may be a better example…first couple pages of Widowspeak’s “Even True Love” that i posted the cover of a week or two ago…
That “DING” (in that case G) kills me badly!
That’s a cool idea, @JohnF . What do the double letters “AA”, “BB”, etc indicate? Are those 16th notes?
Yes, those are 16th notes. That format has been helpful for me with transcribing then practicing. And i think it is helping me learn the fretboard.
This. Makes me wonder if it keeps on playing in the back of my head as I’m asleep during the night. It probably does.
Probably. I think it’s part of learning. Play it, leave it for a few days, come back, oh wow this is easier!
This is well worth watching:
In the video in the ‘how to get better on bass’ thread, Andrew gives sciences best answers to these types of questions.
Thanks for that. Watched it earlier today, very interesting
