What's your opinions on buying Fender?

It was a “sort of” on the fretless AE I HAD, but you couldn’t set intonation as it was an acoustic style bridge. I’d imagine setting intonation on a normal bridge would say that the marks are in tune. Will see next week.

I had that in my sights but told myself I could find the used version (which there are many) with ebonol board for cheaper (which I did) bonus that it’s NOS and not used after all.

I kept them on the neck of my DIY. I agree. baby steps.

Yeah, that’s a good point, I bet there’s quite a few used. I’ll have to have a look in my neck of the woods.

Good point about the intonation too, makes sense

Forgot to ask, the sound itself - how much like a double bass sound is it?

Well….I had nylons on the AE and I’d say that’s as close as your gonna get. I have tapes on my Fender HMT and that can get double bassy but in my opinion none of it is double bassy enough. Closer than rounds on a hot p pickup but closer don’t mean like a.

My go to test riff if “Come Away With Me” for “is this double bassy btw.
I think the fretless helped but I can get same with frets. I think the hollow body helps more with the tapes.

I’m going with flats on the Squier and then gonna mess with pickups.

Useful info, thanks for sharing.

I’m half tempted to just bite the bullet on that squier.

I just can’t see me not playing it. I’ve got a nice routine going where the jazzes get used at the studio for band practice, the P’s I use for mellowing out with some blues at home, along with the double bass too, so I’m fairly sure this wi fit in somewhere.

I’m talking myself into it, aren’t I?

I don’t see a better fretless deal for starting out.

For me though, used or tax free NOS was the clincher to hit “buy””.

Yeah, it seems good all round.

The only thing that’s bugging me, is that I don’t like the classic sunburst colour scheme. I like mad colours.

But can’t seem to find anything other than that one within that price range.

Maybe if I just drink a few more pints, I don’t care about the colour?

It’s because I looked at that gorgeous dark blue velvety fender one. It’s set me off!

You should try a Stingray Special, they are lightweight!

It wouldn’t be my first choice either but I’m buying function over design. If I really do like fretless and get into it……

Haha great minds think alike. I was thinking of getting the squier and if I can adopt it, I’d go for that lovely dark blue fender fretless.

Bastard, this is tough though  I’m so impulsive

Have you looked at the Marcus Miller V7 fretless basses?? A bit more pricey than the Squier, but very nice…

True that! 8.5lbs is very nice. With light tuners and skinnier bridge.

Yeah I’ve been looking for a while and I did have a close look at the sires and was quite tempted.

I’ve plumped for the squier for now, so here goes!

Another family member! I’m so happy!

I’d really like to play a couple of these to see what they are about. They seem like great alternatives at another price point.

Need to find some locally

My first bass (first love) is a Fender MIM Precision bass. Bought it used, good quality, eventually upgraded the pickup to Seymour Duncan quarter pounder. I’m sure there are other basses at better price point of similar or better quality but I love holding a Fender when I play because I love holding that legacy in my hands. I’m looking to get a Fender American Pro II Precision bass to replace it, hopefully soon. I love playing the Fender p-bass but it’s a personal choice.
There are so many amazing options out there, good quality, good value, amazing shapes and colors and options. I have a Schecter Elite that I love to play but it’s a completely different feel.
I will buy other basses but I will always own at least one Fender.

They are like a heavier version of a Fender. The fretboard is rolled, so it’s nice and smooth the length. The materials are nicer, my V7 has a real bone nut. It has a 3 band amp with a sweep for the mid frequency, not the highest quality but perfectly usable. Better than an Ibanez preamp. 18 volt system.

Tuners are smoother than a Fender

Good platform for mods. Very vintage sound, as you would expect from Marcus Miller

I like the ash body but it’s the heaviest of my basses

What I do like about Fender is the upgrade mod options are a lot more numerous and “easy” fits on the outside appearance front.

I’m doing a number of mods to my Jag, and everything is off the shelf, no measurements. Control plate, nut, pickgaurd if I wanted, just Google and there it is. Very convenient
