When To Change Your Strings

I think the stock strings on the TRBX174 are EXLs? They’re fine strings. Not the best but not garbage either. Three months at an hour a day, it might not be a bad time to look at changing those roundwounds out if you want but I don’t think they’re causing the fretbuzz issue. That sounds more like it’s time to do a set up on your bass, which is normal especially transitioning between seasons. Here’s Josh’s video on how to do it (it’s really very simple to do).

Agree on both counts. The EXL’s are fine strings but three months of daily play will deaden almost any roundwound to some extent.

But the buzz is a setup issue.

The buzz starts something like 1 sec. after I play the note (buzz vibration) it’s frustrating when I play whole notes. I adjusted the trus rod, and the height of the strings are about 2,5mm at fret 12.

I pretty much replaced strings on a base when I buy it immediately. I never really know how long they’ve been on, what conditions they’ve seen, who else has been fingering them, etc. etc. plus, I have my go to strings for things.

Finding your go to strings is a very simple process. You buy strings until you fill a drawer with strings you dislike. When the drawers just about full, you find strings that you love and move on from the big search.

I boiled the strings a few days ago, and for a day or so, they sounded better, less fret buzz, but now, 3-4 days later…they buzz like hell, way worse than before. I’ve checked and only from trbx304 Yamaha has EXL’s installed, my 174 has some generic ones. Oh well, I just bought Ernie Ball 2832 (50-70-85-105) but I did not installed them yet.

Like @howard said, buzz generally = setup not strings.

nope…not all strings buzz, only G fret 1 to 3 (frets are leveled…I checked with a card), and some buzz vibrato on A fret 2 after 1 sec…

I performed the truss rod adjustment, and a 2,5 - 2,6mm on fret 12 on all strings
