Which headphones do you have and ACTUALLY use?

Heck yeah. I’m still rocking the iPod mini and nano from time to time. Although can’t add any new songs in anymore only what’s in it. I went through quite a few steps on senuTi app to make that happened , :joy:

that said most of my IEMs are terminated in 4.4mm jack, while some are interchangeable I’m too lazy sometimes to swap them. I just use the iPods for my 3.5mm only. It’s quite remarkable how well it still works albeit the battery life is much shorter now.

I just sold my iPod Touch and Nano yesterday. The iPod Touch 1st gen was in mint condition. The Nano had a defective battery.

Especially the Nano is nice, but 16GByte? That’s not a lot of songs…

That confuses me!

I am one of those ignorants that think MP3 with something like 192kbit is enough, I don’t here much of a difference.

But I hear a clear difference between thick cables and thin cables. Either your cables were so thick that you were in diminishing returns territory, or your thick cables were CCA, your thinner are pure copper.

16gb? Oh mine was the 2nd gen. I misspoke it’s 2nd gen nano and the clip Shuffle I’m still rocking. For a portable player I don’t need room for more than say, 500 songs. I’m actually good with 100 songs.

I wish I could! That could have justified the “old” Oehlbach cables. The new cables are just OFC, the old ones were HPOCC. Don’t even know what it means, except that I was a snob and had money to spend

The new ones are ok, but not great:

In my opinion it’s not - the difference between 192kbit VBR MP3 and FLAC/WAV is significant, cause of artefacts….

I had my whole CD collection (4000++) ripped to 192Kbit VBR.
But then I listened closely to that and reripped everything to FLAC (for at home) and high quality M4U/AAC for “on the road“.
That was a lot of work (4 CD burners in parallel, for weeks), and believe me when I say: I wouldn’t have done that if there were no audible difference.

I need ALL of my songs with me, ALL the time, cause: choice!
It’s my god d@mn 1st Amendment right

The best part of this rig is that it gives you that vintage tape hiss. Digital formats just can’t match it.

Not to worry, my tinnitus drowns out this hiss.

If memory serves, mine had the “Dolby” switch, :joy:

A while ago i was listening to some music on YT music and it sounded terrible! I switched to apple lossless and it sounded just as terrible  probably have to be using Sony headphones to enjoy something like that :joy:

Sometimes it’s all about the “room”

That’s because there isn’t much of a difference.

I’m listening to music on my Galaxy S9+, that’s pretty retro

I love people winesnobbing audio file formats (which have no impact on the sound at all, it’s just a container) and codecs (which can, but for years has been so esoteric that it is nearly insignificant) while listening over low end consumer audio gear with bargain basement DACs (which can have a huge impact on sound quality) and consumer grade low end headphones or earbuds (ditto).

Then again, even those low end DACs by today can sound great and well beyond “good enough”, to the point that you probably need to measure with a scope to definitively tell a difference.

I’m an Apple user and ecosystem but I bought a couple of Android phones so I can get my AutoEQ going through WaveLet, kinda fun.

Oh hey @Barney This is my Walkman Retro,

Oh and also lets talk about the other side, audiophiles who splurge on high end tube DACs. These sound amazing (love them) but they sound amazing because they are taking the great, clean, pure digital stream and enshittifying it with tube compression and harmonic distortion, adding some nice body and warmth that was not in the pristine recording.

I love them, but for the same reason I love tube amps - they add nice natural compression and slight distortion.

But they are not accurately reproducing the original audio.

We are on the other side of the Music we should understand better and definitely have better acceptance of signal. We create analog music an it’s pretty LoFi for the most part.

I listen to just about anything and most of the time appreciate equipments as they are, simply because I’m a gearhead. I can tell you without hesitation that most people can’t tell the difference between the $200 Sennheiser HD6xx and the $75000 HE-1 because there’s no reference on what sounds expensive. I geek out over my $30 IEM and at least one can directly compete with $200-$400 set no question. That’s exciting.

I have a $1600 HD800s but I prefer my $100 JT7 because it sounds better, not better for the price, better period.

Bingo!!

It’s just people playing dress up with audio frequency. It’s like deconstructed dishes, yes they can be quite awesome, sometimes. It’s never going to replace a rich rustic traditional dishes regardless. It’s not even like the awesomeness of the “live” version. I’m not an audiophile, I’m a music absolutist.

My hearing isn’t good enough to tell but my suspicion is that it’s probably turbo bollocks.

My only problem with Apple Music is the Apple logistic. All of my “devices” can use Itunes App. I have Apple One Subscription I can’t choose which one to assign, it’s first come first serve. Yes I know that I can go and remove but it just doesn’t work. I called the “genius” a few times to reset already but then the first 10 devices that log in just get the spots.

Hmmm!!
