Who does their own tech work?

Sounds like a defeatist attitude though - I can definitely make something more broken

I respect that

Hell, I’ve made many things I’ve touched downright irreparable.

I compromised and switched to a double edga safety razor. The Gillette Trak 3 cartridges are insanely priced and now only last me a few shaves each.

Yeah that’s what I use now too. Plus Feather blades are cheap here and work great.

I started several “relic” projects on my basses,

I respect that I cracked a headstock just now on a project bass I was converting from 4 string to a Bass VI.
Nothing good wood glue and a clamp won’t solve tho- don’t panic improvise and learn

Oh my! My project was/ is the opposite as I want to convert my 5 string to 4 string with super wide string spacing :joy:

Stupid question. What’s a brass nut?

The nut material is made of brass. Most are bone or some kind of composite material. But I can see someone using brass. It is malleable and can be filed.

I put a brass nut on one of my builds

If you can keep it shined up, it will look nice. But it is a heavy material, so it will add more weight to the head area of the neck. I saw someone using copper as a scratch plate, I wonder how much that weighs?

It’s just a nut like any other but instead of bone or synthetic material, it’s made of brass and has a different sound characteristics because of that. It has a higher sustain on open strings and sounds more metallic with a zing. It’s also more durable.

Thank you. “Can you hear it? ‘ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…..’”

Brass nuts DO sound better to me, BTW. To me they retain the “open strings sound great” vibe - they do not sound just like a fretted note - but they are more zingy than a bone nut.

It adds 2/5th of fuck all to the weight

I can still hear that note 42 years later

My tinnitus hears many octaves of ringing bells so the nut can be of any material and it is irrelevant. I really wish it were not the case but after fifty plus years of ringing it doesn’t matter.

@Daedalus55

What Genre of music would you use the tone for? Are there any examples that you know of on youtube?
