Why Bass? (What's your origin story?)

Are you sure? That doesn’t ring true.

Just want to chime in to say you should do your own ding.

Doing your own ding can come at a cost….!

I’m glad I chose bass

They are nice, but I’m more interested in the cowbell situation over there.

Ah, the Chad Smith, see you are a connoisseur of these things!!

Tonk, tonk, tonk, tonk…

:slightly_frowning_face:

This work for you?

So, yes, it was a Thomann Triangle, of course.

First I wanted an Avocado triangle, cause I like that vintage thumping tone, especially with the older ones.

(This is a Mexican one, which seems to be great.)

But there is this Asian guy on TriangleBuzz that has hundreds of triangles and he talked me out of it. No Avocado triangle for me :frowning:

It took me a while to learn about triangles. Here everybody talks about their nuts and knobs and shafts, their wood and g-strings or if they like it active or passive.

On TriangleBuzz it’s just about tone. You either like a clear and soft “ding” or a hard dong. It’s a matter of taste, I guess

I tried various triangles, very expensive, like this one:

Very popular ones like this one:

(That’s the one that this famous triangle player from that band from the 70s uses!)

And of course, the one from Harley Benton:

It has a great foundation, had excellent reviews and I decided to change everything I don’t like. Ergonomically it’s much better that the expensive ones I tested. And don’t care about resale value!
I modded it heavily, and now it looks like this … very different … but sounds like a very expensive one. I’m totally happy!

Cause I was so happy and the Harley Benton triangle was so cheap, I got a 2nd one, exactly the same … but made it look more “punk”:

I even made a cover, using that classic song of Billie Joel - but my girlfriend forbid me to play it cause of it’s misogynistic nature. It’s basically a wife beater song in disguise of a love song ^^

I’ve always thought the vintage MIM avocado triangles have more of a squelch than a nice resonant ding. Obviously, some love those vintage tones - indeed, I’ve been experimenting with producing them on a modern instrument, using bits of foam. Actually works quite well…!

But squelch is a good word, isn’t it? Beautifully onomatopoeic. Squelch. Say it, let the word roll around your mouth. There must be a website dedicated to onomatopoeic words…!

I thought, you were more of a banana guy. It’s so Duran Duran

Yes. It fits a desk top or table top fairly well. I even use it on a coffee table sometimes. I mainly use it on an Ikea laptop stand. Sometimes on my computer desk when I’m attempting to read online drum sheet music!

@jeffw Thanks for the photos. They were great. I am interested in the drum set for myself to learn rhythm and I also have 2 grandsons who I am monitoring for interest in music. If they show a serious interest I think they should:

  1. Learn to play drums, then
  2. Learn to play the bass guitar, then
  3. Go on to other stringed instruments if desired.
Looked them up on line. From results it looks like you are not in the US, did not see that on your posts I have looked at.

Good plan. I’m from UK but lived in Oslo, Norway since 1989.

The store I got it from has an online store in the USA. I’ve bought a whole lot of stuff from Gear4Music since 2020!! Quality is usually good and they deliver fast. I get mine from their stores in Sweden and in UK.

And speaking of grandsons. I originally got the 4 pad table top drum which was a little toy-like. So I recently gave that one to my 10 year old grandson and he took to it right away. Think its his favourite thing now.

Out there in the real world there is always a band looking for a decent bassist. So it was in the beginning and so it will be 'til the end of days. That’s how and why I started out on bass. It was a job security thing don’t cha know.

Duran2 are fantastic. JT is actually the reason I picked up a bass in the first place, although NR is certainly a cool guy and knows how to rock the yellow!!

This was a couple of weeks ago at the Latitude festival, their only U.K. date this year (so far).

Duran Duran Rio Live (Latitude Festival 28-07-24)

Sound quality is cr@p (iPhone recording an’ all that), but wow, they were good!
