I love it when my worship leader tells me “We’re changing the keys of 3 songs and cutting the last one” as I walk on to the stage early Sunday morning

Or when there’s a surprise addition to the setlist

Love THIS!! It happens!!! And as a bassist (or any other instrumentalist) you HAVE to be ready to accept the challenge!! Being on a Worship Team is challenging, and REWARDING!..

So glad to see you back @slimbassist….!!..

Keep on Thumpin’!

I’m in east Germany for a few days now, not far from where Martin Luther and Thomas Müntzer preached. So you walk on historical grounds everywhere…

Inspired by this discussion, I went to two churches on Sunday, to listen to their music. One was more evangelical, and it didn’t do much to me. Folksy music with lyrics that conveyed a non new testament moral. Very old testament, with isolated quotes that were not very faithful to the original context.
Jesus would surely not be pleased

The catholic church went all medieval on me. Big organ with pipes and all. Overwhelming choir.
Classic psalms.
Very impressive, but not of these times. Some was in Latin, and I didn’t know what it’s about.

I would prefer a black Gospel church any day … came for the music, found God.
Well, maybe

Fun that this topics pups up now

I have been playing bass at Church last Sunday. That was my 4th appearance.

I’m quite involved into the chruch activities since a couple of years and attend several “offices” each week.

The priest became a friend and participated to our family band gigs on sunday after having lunch with us.

He pushed a few times for me to join the musical team of the church with I did for easter vigil (one of the most beautiful celebration IMHO) after a last push. This is now my 4th time and I can echo a lot of the above

the positive

  • everybody was very welcoming (even if some singers thought the bass was too loud ;-). )
  • Root is the fundation and more is not required (good for me as under god’s pressure, I lose a little of my agility)… tried 7th as well with success
  • It is quite fun as indeed, I receive the sheet music during the day and need to be ready; increase my ability to read / understand sheet music (I started talking bass sheet musice training in //)

the challenge is sound as all other musician are going through church speakers which are not Bass friendly. Therefore I’m using my amp + church speakers but not easy to keep the amp low enough for 1st rows while being able to be heard at the last row

I received great feedback and this is always nice

All in all great experience and not to time consuming

Totally get it! Was born and raised Catholic back when all mass’s were in Latin and the only instrument ever played was an organ…. Was an alter boy till I left for the military and a couple deployments to the Tonkin Gulf during Nam. I can guarantee when you attend a black gospel church’s worship service, you will certainly find Jesus!!

This is SO great! The Goodness of God is one of the songs in our rotation at church. My main motivation to play the bass is to play at church. Just started B2B with the goal to finish by August and to try out for the worship team this winter.

I had the chance to sit in rehearsal and learned they all use in ear monitors and a click track. They also called out the key they were playing the song in. Not sure what all that means yet, but happy to see you all discussing it here. I’m also learning to play the drums. Excited to have found this community!

I thought it was just our group that didn’t rehearse! It doesn’t help that most of the group has been playing together for decades and I’m still a newbie on bass (vocals for ~20 years and only just «discovered» bass). My group is very patient with me!

Story from this evening.

the song list was distributed yesterday night. I prepared everything, listened to all the songs and rehearsed a few I didn’t know.

During the celebration, the singer came to me “change of plan” and handed over a new song sheet but no treble clef, 2 chords on top of each other and a “capo 5” mention… no need to say I didn’t take the risk to ruin the song

So cool!! @JoshFossgreen ‘s B2B will certainly help you reach that goal!! Good luck on trying out for the Worship Team!!

Deja Vu…… Many of the teams I’ve played with over years have played together for years. I still consider myself a “newbie” on bass since I only started on the instrument in 2019 after many years on guitar….

Here’s a thought…… The original apostles all played together since the very beginning,… and then all of a sudden this dude named Paul (Saul) steps on stage…. Hmmmm….

Keep on Thumpin’!

@GGWAW when I get a quick change beyond my “on the fly” capabilities- my rule is- don’t play. It’s never a mistake to “play less” notes. But it IS frustrating. I own the fact that I am not that good of a musician- so that mellows me out, too. Less stress.

This is a great idea Lanny.
I’m old and just decided to start learning bass last October to keep my mind and other parts working for as long as possible. Drummer decades ago. Purchased a Yamaha TRBX 304 based on the advice from the church bass guy with no real real plans to expand beyond playing with youtube/songster/Guitar Pro/etc in my basement. With nothing to compare, I like the 304 - is a perfect value and sound. This effort has really made me appreciate the skills of guitar musicians.
The church bass player suggested listening to worship music to understand the technique, however there are just as many subgenres as any other genre so I think this thread will help sort things out for me and I’ll be ready for my audition with the group leader by the end of summer. It’s a 4 piece group - lead guitar, piano, bass, cajon. So far I completed 4 months of Fender Play and now plan to enroll in the Beginner to Badass course. While both of these courses are valuable, I’m hoping this thread will fill the gap for this genre.
Thanks

Here’s a chatgtp output of genres. The try omitted “worship” until I asked for it specifically.

asked for an expansion of worship and this is the result.

Agreed - I tried to find the right notes with no volume to test hypothesis

But was very happy not to mess up the whole thing
