2024 Bass Highlights / 2025 Bass Goals & Ambitions

Signing up for the B2B course was the best money I spent on bass, bar nothing…!

Edit, signing up for the B2B course was the best money I spent on a hobby in 2023…!

Not having the course… Here is a thread you can look over … which has a LOT of useful videos from Josh…

I still would recommend the course… It is AMAZING … and Josh is a great teacher

You never know. I can think of at least one case where it’s happened.

2024:

  • Some time in Sep had the idea to take my unused bass out of its case and try to learn some Paul McCartney Beatles Bass lines.
  • This led me to YouTube and Josh’s video about James Jamerson
  • This led me to more of Josh’s videos and B2B
  • Started B2B yesterday - its very satisfying.

2025 and Forward

  • Complete B2B
  • Learn to Read more fluently
  • Learn to play melody by ear more fluently
  • Play with some peoples
  • Stretch Goal: learn Paul’s bass line to “Don’t Let me Down”

My goals for 2025:

  1. Continue my work in the cover band I joined (Clash in Pocket). I’m the least experienced person in the band. The other guys are all working musicians who have played in other projects. I’m learning songs quickly but I feel like I need a way to learn more quickly and keep everything memorized. I’m trying chord sheets. I’m excited but anxious not to let them down.

  2. Keep working on mastering the fretboard. I’m trying an exercise using triads to navigate around the board.

  3. Continue in my learning about modes and apply them more.

  4. Continue getting better with a pick and continue learning to play slap style. Slap has been frustrating for me!

I bought the beginner Squire bass a year ago and only purchased the B2B course about a month ago. I am into Module 4 and enjoying every minute of it!

Get a new TV…

mine (which is many years old) has died so I cannot play my Bass Buzz dvds and finish the course…which admittedly I am taking the slow boat through

My 2024 was a complete shit-show… but oddly enough, not with bass. Like, I lost my GF of 15 years, I lost my dad (I mean, he’s still around, but his dementia has gotten so bad that he’s pretty much a goldfish now), I lost a promotion at work, blah, blah, blah. But I just kept going with bass. I started taking in person lessons, and really started to work on my weaknesses - knowing the fretboard, knowing my scales, learning the theory behind them, even starting to work on reading actual music, not just tab.

Bass was, like, the one good thing in 2024.

In 2025, I plan to continue with the lessons and continue with the work. I want to start jamming with people, eventually landing (or hell, starting) a weekend dive-bar classic rock cover band kinda gig.

I think I’d also like to get a decent “rig” setup in 2025. I’m not sure exactly what I mean by that yet, but I think it has something to do with making my playing area not a chaotic mess but instead have some organization and order and some decent pedals and the like. That might be a pipe dream.

2024

  • Move away from “root note / quarter notes” to more complex lines; get closer to original song version
  • Significantly improve ability to play “simple” bassline and deliver an OKish performance in 2 /3 attempts
  • Develop some music theory basic knowledge (augm / dim …)
  • Family concert #2 (but much higher level then edition #1)

2025

  • Find an online course to use my new 5 strings bass and play it like a 5 string (plan is to use Bruno Tauzin site but struggling with Paypal… any good idea welcome)
  • Go deeper into theory (Bought music theory for dummies)
  • Continue develop technique (finish talking bass groove course at 100% speed - some modules are still resisting) and try playing with a pick (maybe leveraging B2B again)… slap is also tempting but maybe a stretch (and I don’t have opportunity to use it excpect for fun… which can be a great reason btw)
  • Don’t buy a new bass (1 new bass every year over the last 3 years…); savings for my 50 yo birthday in 2026

Careful with that lesson #6 of Module 4 … That one has a bit of a ‘rep’ :stuck_out_tongue:

2024 : first full year of bass playing (started may ‘23)
Playing covers, recording myself for the technique challenge
Finished Mark Smith’s chord essentials ( not that you can ever finish that one…lots to redo and practice)
Practicing almost every day (missing only 4 days in 2024)

2025: trying more challenging basslines but also playing “easier “ basslines with more groove and conviction
Started a chord course
FIND PEOPLE TO PLAY WITH

Oh, yes. I am aware of the infamous BJ that us virgin bass players/ learners are in for.

I am going to approach this (and all lessons) in an Aurelian fashion:
The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.

I am already beginning the lesson with a tactful plan which will be implemented in the next few days… but there is no anxiety; I see it as a challenge that must be overcome.

2024 highlights: finishing BB course, and being able to record my own covers. Starting to work with a bass teacher and learning solfège.

2025 goals: keep improving, learning sight reading and not having to rely so much on tabs. More music theory, getting into a band, hopefully playing live this year.

Bass Highlights from 2024

  • Completed B2B
  • Began playing with the church worship band
  • Began some Mark Smith lessons
  • resumed playing keys- got pulled into keys in worship (less bass time).

2025 Goals

  • finish some Mark Smith lessons.
  • steal less practice time from bass to keys.
  • play more bass.
  • get to comfort level with scales/a few modes
  • clean up technique/flying fingers
  • force feed Nashville Numbers into my head

I played both bass and keys (both poorly) when I was young. Then I had kids. End music. Never thought I’d pick any of it back up. But with empty nest and time to spare I got back into it. Bass first, then started noodling on keys. That created practice time conflict and also live playing issues- I’ve been roped more into keys lately. I have to say, without Josh and B2B I never would’ve made it back. I’m in utter shock disbelief that I am actually playing either on stage. I played more live in the last year than I ever have. Thank you @JoshFossgreen

OK, modifying my 2025 goals. Primary goal is to focus less on doing “paint by numbers” covers, and instead focusing on the musical structure. So I’ll do covers, but pay more attention to chord progression and chord tones used so that I’m learning more about what makes it work. I’m hoping to translate that into practicing with jam tracks and better knowing how to be creative when following a progression.

Hi there!

In 2024, I had to reboot my project at work and was despairing over it. But I was in a good place outside of work and met my partner who helped me out with my work, invited me to move in, put a corner aside for my bass and even listens to my crappy guitar practice. Well, she ignores it or puts earphones on, but still!

My bass highlight is that she came to a gig I played. :kissing_heart: She later said “I couldn’t film you because the singer is so big, you were hidden behind him.” We had a great laugh, but it’s true the singer is a huge guy.

So, my goal for 2025 should be to play a cool gig and have my girlfriend there again. I’ve been working on moving around on stage, which feels like an extra skill, so that should help.

Aside from this, I will continue to learn to sing and play (bass, guitar, whatever) and hopefully finish the Talking Bass Sight Reading course vol. 1.

Cheers,
Antonio
