5 Beginner Bass Riffs (You Can’t F*** Up)

I’m gonna show you five beginner bass riffs - from real songs you know - that you don’t stand a CHANCE of f***ing up. I dare you.

If you’re doing the Beginner to Badass course, you could play any of these riffs pretty decently by Module 4 or so. Have fun!

What was your favorite bass riff when you first got started on bass?

Josh Man ,

This is definitely one of your better videos for sure. Excellent flow for us with short Squirrel attention spans. Your humor is infectious and my hope is that the views reach the millions.

And my gosh , just how many black rock shirts do you own? Actually , we should be directing that question to the new bride. But seriously , I /we appreciate your efforts , your attention to details , and I am so thankful for all that you have provided for decades now.

Stay Brilliant , Keep Creating , And Always Lead With Your Heart ,

Cheers

P.S. As I Mentioned On The YT Channel , my first riff was Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon. And yes , I was playing it wrong of course but I looked so duper cool

I’m still playing that Seven Nation riff some 5 years later. I played it at our gig last night and the crowd loves that mashup version.

I can’t be the only person who immediately paused the video to see what was written above the staffs on the Rime Of The Ancient Mariner sheet music, can I?

No, you were not the only one! I paused and zoomed in.

I’ve just actually watched the video … while we didn’t play it last night, Zombie is also on our main set list :winking_face_with_tongue:. Incidentally, my 11 year old daughter is also learning this song in her school band - she plays piano - so we’re planning to play this one together over the next couple of days!

I practiced the ‘I love rock ‘n’ roll’ riff and I am doing it okay. But I got the guitar sounds in my head [they kind of drown out the bass to my ears] so the bass line doesn’t quite sound right to me by itself unless I play it with the music in the background. Is this just a matter of developing my ears or am I possibly not playing it right? The Seven Nation Army bit sounds good to me once I got the timing figured out.

If you get a chance please let me know. I did look through the forum for an answer but really didn’t find anything.

One of several I think beginners should start out with.

Only one note, but it’s all about 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 that note.

Nice song for working on your timing, too.

Another one.

And another.

One more.

I realized that my windows 11 setup doesn’t have much for EQ settings.

So I found some freeware that is excellent. www.fxsound.com

Just to prove you can get the simple wrong, here’s my band playing Seven Nation last Friday. Two points, 1) I get the start of the riff wrong and err, restart, and 2) I don’t play exactly per the original :winking_face_with_tongue:
