7 Reasons Les Claypool is Strangely Awesome (+Lesson Tips)

Tonight I was trying the entry-level slap drumming and enjoying some dissonant tri-tone notes, along with some slides that sounded a little like driving over rumble strips. My daughter, sitting nearby reading, asked me to stop. “You’re making really weird noises.”
So…that’s a start.

It’s no good unless it annoys the children.

That just means she wants you to sing too. Trust me, they love this.

lol oh yes that would go over big! :no_entry_sign: According to her, she’s the only one allowed to sing in the house.

Lol, that’s how you know you’re on the right track!

Update: I was explaining to my daughter why I was making weird noises on my bass and she ended up watching most of the Les Claypool video. She thinks you’re hilarious, and when you played Lacquer Head said, “Wow, that’s pretty impressive.”

She’s now going around the house saying, “You’re the guy from the hamburger train, right?” (My dad lived in East L.A. as a teenager, so the fact that she’s quoting a Cheech and Chong movie…I’m dying. I’m dead.)

This is parenting at its finest. Well done!

Why thank you! I couldn’t be prouder.

You should be! Kids quoting PeeWee in a Cheech and Chong movie is next-level.

I…I actually am. She gets weirdness, and it’s delightful. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Definitely. I was pretty lucky growing up that my parents embraced weirdness in their kid. I had friends that weren’t so lucky.

Weirdness is also a sign for creativity. Pretty sure that all great musicians, artists and even successful business men are weird in some way.

Great start to the day.
I prefer to be greeted to Ground Hog’s Day, but Mr. Krinkle will certainly do.

Don’t ever really want to greet the day to Sargent Baker tho.

I’ve seen Les live many many times. In fact the very first concert I ever saw was their Pork Soda tour. But one of the more memorable shows I saw, was back when he was doing the “Colonels Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains”. All four musicians are ridiculously talented (rest in peace Bernie Worell). I saw them twice on their C2B3 tour. One of the shows was at the 4th and B in San Diego. It was a really cool venue. But its just a big concrete slab now. Not sure when they tore it down. But it is long gone.

I’ll post these on my video index. They probably will serve me well in the future to show my progress. I posted the JWARD on the bass subreddit a couple of weeks ago, and heard nothing but negativity. Personally I think its very decent. The timing is off, which I’ve worked on since taking the video. But for a beginner I think its pretty good. I’d be curious to hear feedback on both.

You should post these in the Post your Covers thread. More folks will view and provide feedback (only constructive here, it’s how we roll).

How long you been playing?
