80s Ibanez Roadstar II… worth hunting down?

A long time ago (mid 80s) I started to learn to play bass. My then-boyfriend was a musician. He gave me a Roadstar II to play with. Unfortunately he asked to “borrow” it not long before we broke up, and I never saw it again.

So, all this time I’ve kinda had this mini obsession with that particular bass, and I’d love to get my hands on another one.

Now, my question to those of you who have one, is it worth seeking one or am I suffering from fond memories?

If you think it’s worth it to you, then it’s worth trying to hunt down in my very humble opinion. Even if you get your hands on one and decide you don’t like it, sell it on but you will have answered the question for yourself. Otherwise, it’s always going to be there bugging you.

I agree. Two different forum members here have rebought not just the same model bass, but the actual same instrument that they had sold, because they loved that particular one so much. So I would say tracking down the same model of instrument is just fine.

I have a ton of guitars and effects and amps and when I step into a second hand shop I’m looking for everything that got away from me somewhere down the line. Granted I could ebay or reverb them right into the house but that’s not what I’m after I want to find them in the wild hold them in my hands and be that 18 or 19 yr old at the music store where I found them the first time all over again.

I now own 3 of the same “my first bass”. I know it doesn’t mean much coming from me, :joy:

I guess I didn’t realize they made the MBs in 5 string. I think I like the look of those even more than the 4’s. I should really just get one. I love them every time I see one.

They don’t. That’s the only one.

There’s a purple Motion MB-III at the local music go round. Do I need to go check this out?

I was looking at that exact one online. I would. If it was local to me, I’d already own it tbh.

Everyone should check these out. They are amazing and adorable little basses, with fantastic pickups. MIJ Yamahas for like $200!

I owned a MB-III and loved everything about it a lot, except I just didn’t get in to the 32" scale as much as I thought I would from jamming in stores. They are seriously fun to play but I just prefer 34".

These and the other MB’s from the era (MB-40, etc) are easy to find here, I see them literally every time I go to Ochanomizu too. Always a bunch on the used market online.

Yeah. That’s at one of my local MGR’s.

Dammit. I really don’t need to buy a new bass every other month. Worth checking out.

It’s a 2 octave 32" scale of goodness. It’s one of a few cult following models.

Yeah, big cult following. People love these.

Usually at least one of the stores here that will ship internationally will have them used. I just found this one at Shimokura; expensive for here but probably not at all for the states. Shipping would run you about another ¥30k, most likely.

This is a reputable store, I have bought from them.

That’s about $265.00 USD, plus shipping, plus 24% tariff (63.60) puts that right around the cost of the one at Music Go Round.

Yeah that one is about 1.5x their usual cost here, and lmao tariff, forgot about that bit of dumbfuckerry.

I was looking hard at that BB VIII that you picked up, did the calculation and got a sadface. Now just isn’t the time to buy instruments internationally if you’re in the US.
