Neil Young is providing free, one-year access to his entire music catalog to people in Greenland via his personal, independent digital platform, the Neil Young Archives (NYA).
While Neil sold 50% of his copyright interests to Hipgnosis in 2021, he retained the right to control how his music is streamed or accessed through his own website and his own archival platform.
This deal is separate from any deals he’s made with streaming platforms like Amazon, which he’s kicked to the curb and from which he’s removed all his music.
In short, Neil’s gesture to Greenland is a “gifting access to my own archive” scenario, not a transfer of copyright ownership.

As a musically fun aside, there is a recent Stringjoy Podcast on their Tape Spaghetti program talking about the different licencing deals and arrangements.
They start with MJ buying the Beatles catalogue under Sir Paul’s nose and go through Bowie bonds etc.
I don’t have a link but it is on Spotify and there was a link in their emails
