A little music related fun

So in the Netflix TV show “The Ozarks” the portion about them “being a Hillbilly and better then being a Redneck” is totally made up.
Like when “Darlene” the crazy hillbilly bitch shot the high ranking member of the Mexican drug Cartel, after just striking a huge deal with him for land and heroin, just for calling her a redneck and not a hillbilly in her own home would be total BS?

Not that I am suprised, I mean, it was a bit over the top that she did it in a tv show in tge first place, so yeah, its not a real life thing, I am just talking about the whole premise the scenario was based upon.

If anything it kind of shows good show writing skills to make all that up from thin air.

I would rather be a hillbilly than a redneck. Hillbillies are generally awesome musicians!

The whole interstate from South of Sacrament (Lodai) thru Fresno down to Bakersfield is most certainly the most Redneck part of the US I have ever traveled thru.

There’s a whole lot of rural out that way for sure.

So, not much Klan, but the whole PNW was pretty much rife with literal nazis back in the '70s-80s. Most of them spread from Hayden Lake, Idaho through to heavy presences in both Portland and Seattle. A big part of growing up as someone in to punk and related music in the '80s there was, quite literally, dodging and (hopefully avoiding) fighting nazis. Portland was especially bad; large parts of the east side had a serious skinhead presence, and not the good kind original East Coast skinheads, but rather the nazis that subverted them. If you ever wondered why Antifa had a strong presence from the PNW, a big part of the reason is that there actually was a fascist problem to fight there. Not that I defend their methods per se, but just saying I can understand where they came from. They used to call themselves SHARPs - SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice. A lot of them were assholes too, but at least they weren’t nazis.

The nazi compounds in Hayden Lake eventually got busted in a huge FBI/BATF raid that convicted their Fuhrer. After that, things mellowed out some. Still there though. Michael Moore sent them love-spreading cheerleaders once in a hilarious satirical attempt to mellow them out.

Darlene was certifiably bat-shit crazy.

And she was even more racist against Mexicans than the cartel guy was about her. Still, they’re all fictional characters.

With all the back and forth here, I decided to Iook up the definition of hillbilly. Apparently, it originated in 1881 as an often disparaging and offensive term used to describe a person from a backwoods area.

So very sorry for your losses.
Lost my nephew to a car crash in eastern Oklahoma back in 2018.
Not quite as close to home as your loss, but loss is loss. Its never a good thing.

It is nice to hear you have been able to move on, with many fond memmories that you are able to share without discomfort in your new life.

And “The Baldies” the Anti-Nazi Skinheads"
They started a chapter in Portland, and then had a gunfight outside of portland resulting in the death of the singer of a Neo-nazi band from Minnesota, coincidentally where “The Baldies” Charter Chapter was formed, and run from.

There is a really good documentary on YouTube, Actually called “The Baldies”.
You can search it on youtube. It is really good, and its just under an hour, so its not too long of a watch to where it gets boring.

Yeah, I know all about it.
I had surf boy long hair, and that was something they went after too, and going to punk shows in Orange, LA, Riverside San Bernardino and even San Diego Counties, there is always a Nei-Nazi presence arounrd one side and in the pit, so, I had some minor brushes with a few
Nothing too bad, cuz 1 on 1, most run.
I got threw it ok tho, even At shows that turned into Riots cuz of them starting shit.
One all day show in San Bernardino turned full riot and city Workrs cut the power while The Decendants were on stage and a full on riot in the crowd was going on. Next to play would have been Guttermouth.
So
Not only do you dodge Faciats, then you have police in Riot gear outside waiting for you.
Not as bad as it sounded if you just snuck iut peacefully, which we did.
And
All probably because Guttermouth was the bext band to play
And
A few months before that, on a New Year night In 94-95 or 95-96, we were at a Guttermouth show.
Mark the singer at the end of the show, (that was somewhat problematic due to Neo-Nazis starting a lot of shit in the pits) yelles something to the effect of
“All you Nazis out there will be going home alone, or with your little faggot buddies tonight, cuz nobody wants to fuck a nazi”
And in the song Called
“Ass Hole”
they sing
“Fuck white power and the KKK.
A - S -S - H - O -L - E”
So
A super tough group of awesomly powerful guys caught him alone in back of the venue after the show and in a totally even, respectful and fair fight of 3-1 or 4-1 put him in the hospital with a concussion and some other injuries.
Nothing too bad, they wanted to keep it even and fair, so they didnt use any deadly weapons.
So
I guess they decided to ruin the “all day” punk show, a few months later, only about 1/2 way thru the lineup, with the best bands yet to play, as a carry on from that incadent.
If
they had brains amongst them, they would get thru the whole lineup and not waste everybody’s money, and still have a good time with a full concerts worth of great bands yet to play. But thats life.

And

The sad part is these groups come and take over some of my favorite bands shows, all non racist bands, that talk shit on white power and racism in songs, but they think its music for them for some stupid reason. Not like music for everybody, them included, just music for them.

4-5 years back we went to one of the best shows I have been to this decade. It was
The Gears
opening for
Fang
opening for
The Smut Peddlers.

Fang, Led by singer Sammy, a non Racicst Skinhead form the early days, has a song called “Skinheads Smoke Dope” and of course the Neo-Nazis at the show take over the pit. With no clue whatsoever, pretty much have turned that song into one of their Anthem, not understanding its not about them.

And then we have “L’il Abner.” I was exposed to this comic strip (and its version of “hillbillies”) in the Sunday funnies way back when, written and drawn by Al Capp. A story based on the strip was made into a Tony-award-winning Broadway play, then into a film.

Li'l_Abner_3_-29-1947_Excerpt

Also during this period, Capp was working at night on samples for the strip that eventually became Li’l Abner . He based his cast of characters on the authentic mountain-dwellers he met while hitchhiking through rural West Virginia and the Cumberland Valley as a teenager. (This was years before the Tennessee Valley Authority Act brought basic utilities such as electricity and running water to the region.)

“America, what a country!” (as Ukranian-American comedian Yakoff Smirnoff would say)
