I’ve fallen deeeeep into the “Bluegrass covers of popular songs” genre on several occasions. I’m not really a country fan either, but for some reason these just resonate.
I think maybe my favorite was this Rocketman cover:
That’s a great rendition. Bluegrass music is rooted in complex vocal harmonies and outstanding musicianship.
As opposed to much of today’s country music (essentially pop music with a twang), I find bluegrass more inventive, featuring instrumental virtuosity and really interesting arrangements. Great modern bluegrass bands demonstrate a respect for structure similar to that of classical music.
In fact, here is arguably one of the best Newgrass bands, Punch Brothers, playing Bach:
I like Iron Horse, they do Metallica and Guns n Roses better than the originals
