It sounds like there might be a high fret. I would recommend checking it with a fret rocker.

press on 1st fret and the one where the neck gets thick and joins the body (the flexing essentially ends there)

This @dodotrix: always measure halfway between the first fret and the point where the neck joins the body. On a jazz bass, this is typically around the 16th, 17th fret. Press on the string there, and then measure around the 8th fret. If you’re measuring between the 1st and 13th fret, you might miss some of the neck curvature.

Yeah, maximum bow tends to be 7th-9th for me too.

Thanks everyone for sharing all the details and advice, I decided to go to professional to set it up just so I have it cleanly done the first time. But for next time I will know how to set it up properly.
