All about the bass...recorder

YouTube threw this up in my feed this morning. There are some amazing parallels with playing a bass guitar, like finger stretches and articulations.

My brain is hardwired from my childhood to associate the word recorder with screechy random nonsense.

Been playing this electronic recorder since 2021! Recorder without the squeak!
(You can play it acoustically but I never do :face_with_tongue: )

I love this.

Its great! It connects via Bluetooth to a phone app with 30 + instrument sounds. I mainly use the recorder, oboe, sax, flute and clarinet presets. Its also a midi controller so I use it with Ableton and various VSTs/plugins. Plus it can also control hardware synths so I use it with some presets on a Korg Monologue synth and a Novation Mini Nova.

This is cool. I know @joergkutter has a wind controller too.

Indeed - I have three different ones now

I “need” them for compositions to add melodies and/or solos. I am just more fluent on a wind controller (coming from saxophone) than on a (synth) keyboard.

Wind controllers have come a long way since I played the Yamaha WX-7 in the 90s (it’s still a great controller, the interfacing is just more cumbersome; this being pre-USB), and there is a variety of instruments out there (inexpensive to quite pricey). Mind you, most have a learning curve to them (including adjusting controller and MIDI settings), which can be pretty steep.

But, they’re lots of fun also.

I originally got the re.corder having seen a post from an influencer/flute player. Also my daughter’s partner of the time is a saxophone player and had just bought a digital sax so I got curious! I hadn’t played the recorder since my school days in the 1960/70s but I was playing tunes within the first day. It is lots of fun and has become a big part of my music playing retirement project. I now play a number of instruments but none of them particularly well!

I find that every wind controller has its own quirks :joy: Some are easier to play, but less expressive. Others are very expressive, but if you don’t have control over the settings and how you play, you find yourself in portamento hell… Or just the feedback that you get (or don’t get) from the keys (how fast they react; do you actually have to push them down or just touch). And so on…

What plugins are you using? I have EWI patches from Patchman (those need Logic’s built-in ES2 synth engine to work); Davidson Audio had great wind controller plug-ins (EVI-NER, Lyrihorn), but they are apparently out-of-business and the plug-ins are no longer available…

I also still own an old VL-70m hardware unit… setting it up is just a bit of a drag; much easier to use VSTs

That looks really interesting. I just ordered a white one from Thomann. They sell the original 4 colors (black, white, red and blue) for 127 €, and the 2 new colors (yellow and green) for 147 €. The new colors don’t even show up on Artinoise’s website and I couldn’t find any difference, so I didn’t see any reason to pay the extra 20 €. In any case, the white one was my favorite color.

Wow! I hope you have fun (and some serious music making) with it. I don’t know if you are on Facebook but there’s a friendly active re.corder group there if you are interested in joining. There are a lot of mixed opinions on how good or otherwise the re.corder is. But I’ve had good experience with it for almost five years now and actually own more than one! I got my blue one direct from Artinoise with the first rollout.

Hi. The re.corder uses touch sensors. From the app you have control over several settings such as breath, velocity, pressure (curves/aftertouch) . On choosing an instrument in the app you can transpose up or down -12 / + 12. For example I normally set the Alto sax at -7. Gives a really nice tone. For VSTs/plugins I use mainly UVI’s Orchestral Suite 2 (recently upgraded) and some Ableton Live packs - Orchestral Woodwinds, Orchestral Strings and Brass Quartet plus some of their stock presets. Also a couple of free plugins DSK Saxophone and Saxophia. Finally Arturia’s Analog Lab Pro - mainly with pads and keyboard controllers but it has some decent wind/brass presets plus some fun Theremin type presets.

Thanks :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s funny, but I am generally not interested in emulating a sax (sound); they often don’t sound too convincing. I prefer flute/shakuhachi/synth-like sounds. A bit like this here:

Not anymore. I’ve canceled my Facebook and Instagram accounts, my Microsoft 365 subscription and am moving my 2 Gmail accounts to Proton Ultimate (email, VPN, calendar, cloud, password manager). I replaced MS Office with OnlyOffice. I also have a subscription to Kagi (an outstanding search engine). I don’t use Google Search anymore. The AI update to it was f’ing awful. I’m getting as far away from the U.S. tech giants as possible.

I find the re.corder to be very accessible and even with my low skill level I get a lot out of playing. Ironically its very difficult to find a decent recorder plugin! But the recorder preset on the Artinoise app is pretty authentic.

Fair enough. If after getting your re.corder you have any questions I’m happy to answer them here.
