As many of you I’m new to playing bass. Since I began this course I’ve been using a positive grid spark go, with different headsets, now i’m using the sony mdr-7506. up until now all good. of course the built in speaker is useless but works ok with the headsets. as i live in an apartment i bought a desk amp for bass, a Joyo BA-30. it has very good reviews and many youtubers talk about it. BUT! besides the difference of playing with headsets vs without, I noticed it kind of sounds out of tune!! how is this even possible?? i’ve tested both amps and the notes sound different. Any idea, thoughts, recommendations?? is it maybe because of a different EQ? thanks!
It’s a phenomenal of a the small driver. The Joyo has a 4” driver some time you just need to find a sweet spot where you can hear the fuller form low frequency waves. Same goes to the smaller 15w amps.
Have you tried putting a tuner in front of it? I have a Korg TM-60 metronome. Would be neat to see how out of tune it is.
I read that the box around the speaker has its own resonance, which could distort the sound. If it’s on a cheap table, the table can also resonate and create noise. Have you tried putting the amp on a different surface/stand?
Maybe it helps to do a low cut below 60/100Hz with the EQ?
If it’s bluetooth, it might be distorting the pitch of the streamed audio. I’ve got a receiver at work that pitch shifts everything up.
This is a great point.
I’ve had trouble with this in lessons with bluetooth connections and transcribing parts for students.
thank you all for the messages. i’ve tried both ways with headsets and without. I’ve not used it to its max volume (which is quite high for its size). The placement and surface of where i put the amp seems to have some impact but after testing i believe it was a combination of EQ and (bad) bluetooth. I’ve been tinkering with the EQ and it seems I found a config where i feel comfortable at. Bluetooth sound definitely feels different from other devices. so… too late to return it, i may sell it and get something else.
again appreciate your contributions

Reach out to the manufacturer. Let them know about the problem. There’s a chance they’ll help you fix it or send a replacement.
Especially if there is a BlueTooth issue. That’s something that should pretty objectively be, “Hey, I can’t use this as a practice amp if it plays out of tune.” That might be something that can be corrected with a firmware update.
