I just bought the Fender Rumble 40 Amp and it is arriving tomorrow. I was just wondering what the best settings would be? I know in lesson one, Josh said to leave everything at 12. On the Amp review page, he said to drop the low-mid knob a hair. So Im guessing I should at least do that. I also know next to nothing about bright/contour/vintage settings. Is it worth it to use any of those during the course? I am on Lesson 2 of Module 2 if that helps at all.

I sometimes use Grok or Chatgpt and ask it how to adjust the settings on my Katana 110 to the artists style of tone or specific to the song.
Also YT vids are often good and informative.
You aren’t going to harm it. It’s not a bomb, turning the knobs is not dangerous. You can always go back to high noon to reset.
In general, Fender amps have a big mid scoop (which the “contour” control makes bigger). So for a fun start I would recommend trying just boosting and cutting the mids, particularly the high mids.
While it’s not exactly what you asked, my mindset at the moment is “leave the sound alone and just play”.
This is a hobby, or a journey, of many years. You can spend a lifetime mastering your tone. I found that I am getting too obsessive with those things when I get started, to the point that I practice less playing. So I decided to put as little time into the tone and the gear (at the moment) and just do the next lesson.
If you never played before and you are at module 2 (meaning, you are a real beginner), I would recommend you play a bit with the controls to see what you like, but just get back to playing.
There will be lots of time to finesse your tone when you start playing full songs and recording yourself later on.
While I generally agree and especially about the perfectionism bit, one thing it is really important for beginners to do with all your new gear is have some fun playing with it and just make some noise.
You really want to make that “fun” association with the gear early. Its easy to forget how intimidating it all can be at first.
Thanks for all the replies. I did ask some AI questions and it was pretty cool to ask for exact settings for certain songs and it just set it right up.
Im going to pretty much leave it as is and change as I go.
Not only I run my amps flats for at least a few months, I also defaulting in running all of my bass flats as well.
You are still new, I can tell you running them flat will be the most unique tone you’ll ever hear. Almost everyone touch everything as soon as they tune up the bass, sometimes even before hearing the first note.
When you are in tune with flat tuning, tone matching is much easier.
The prevailing wisdom that I follow is:
Adjust amp EQ to adapt to the acoustics of the room.
Adjust preamp EQ (on active bass, pedals, etc.) to sculpt the sound for the specific song/genre.
