Another What to get next

Hello all. I know this has been asked before (I searched), but all cases are different, so I am looking for some advice. I have played guitar for years. I own a Strat, Tele, 335 and two acoustics. So, obviously I am missing a Les Paul, but I pretty much have covered anything I could want for guitar - Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz, etc.

I started B2B 4 months ago, and am completely obsessed with the bass guitar. I have a Sterling Ray34, and a Sire P5. So, what do you think that I am missing if I want to cover the same ground as with guitar? I really want to avoid GAS and collecting, but would be happy to add another to the mix. No real price range, although the two I own were each under $500 and seem very good quality. Thanks for any advice. Scott

The obvious answer is a 5 string*, and you could go jazz bass to cover the Trinity of basses Leo fender designed that are classics.

You can make a good approximation of any song in the genres you listed with the basses you already have unless you’re running into rock/pop songs that use that B string and you can’t just tune down.

*ETA or a four string set up BEAD

Obviously what’s still missing is a Jazz bass :jbass:

A bass with dual humbucking pickups. Something like a Yamaha 604.

Yep, a Jazz. I love my Sire V8. Superb bass.

I assumed that a Jazz bass would be the next logical. Thanks for the recommendations. Maybe there will be some Black Friday deals. Thanks all.

To be honest, you can cover all genres on a P bass. If you bring a P bass to practice no one will say anything. I’ve read that 75% of all music was recorded on a P.

Between that and the Sterling, you have it about covered.

That being said, Jazz or 5 string.

I am pretty sure this is 100%. So, in no hurry, but if a Jazz bass pops up for sale, I may go for it. Yo are right about the P Bass. Playing in my basement, there isn’t too much of a difference. But playing it with the band (first time last night), the P Bass definitely cuts through much more. It sounded great. Thx
